When I'm free 和 If I'm free, 意思居然差了十条街！

比如哪天一个外国人要你做什么事，你回答，"I'll take care of it when I am free this afternoon."

结果到了晚上，你要是还没有处理，外国人就会来找你了。

你可能会很委屈，“我只是说我有时间的话会处理，又没说我一定会处理。”

而其实在外国人眼里，这句话并不是这个意思，而是，“你会有时间，你一定会处理”。

之所以会出现这种误会，是因为我们对when的理解不到位。

when是必然发生（will happen）；if是可能发生（might happen）

I'll take care of it when I am free this afternoon.（今天下午我有时间，我会处理。）→一定有时间

I'll take care of it if I am free this afternoon.（如果我今天下午有时间，我就会处理。）→可能有时间，可能没时间

天气放晴的话，我们就去展览会场。

（X）We may go to the fair, when the weather is bright and sunny.

（√）We may go to the fair, if the weather is bright and sunny.

人不能主宰天气，不能决定天气是否会晴，所以要用if强调不一定。

如果我老了，我会和我的孩子一起生活。

（X）If I am old, I'd love to live with my kids.

（√）When I am old, I'd love to live with my kids.

人老是自然规律，必然发生。

还有一个和when， if类似的词语，是in case（万一）。

「万一」比「如果」的语气更强烈，更多了一些担心，希望它不要发生。

I need painkillers if I'm in severe pain.

如果我疼到难以忍受的话，我需要止痛药。

I need painkillers in case I'm in severe pain.

万一我疼到难以忍受的话，我需要止痛药。
