  第三部分 阅读理解 (共20小题, 每小题2分, 满分40分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A, B, C, D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。Have you ever been bitten? Of course you have. You are surrounded by living things which might, or do, bite. Even when you rest your head on your pillow, bedbugs are probably nibbling away(蚕食) at you. They live happily inside most pillows.

Take a walk outside and you are a target for “man’s best friend. ” Hundreds of dog-bite victims visit US emergency rooms daily. Many bites are terrible. To avoid the dogs in your neighborhood, you might want to hike into the desert or the woods. There, you run the risk of bites from rattlesnakes, scorpions, and blood-sucking ticks. Not to mention bears, wolves, coyotes, and mountain lions.

Speaking of housing, watch out when you touch the corner of your house or garage. Shy but deadly, the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider make themselves comfortable in quiet areas of your closets or garage. One bite from either of them can make you very sick; occasionally, people die from such bites. Unfortunately, many people fear all spiders, not just the few dangerous ones. They squash them or run from them at first sight, not realizing that most spiders are actually beneficial to man.

If you’re concerned about bites, don’t forget about rabid(患有狂犬病的) animal bites. Any warm-blooded animal can get infected with rabies. Although humans in the US rarely get attacked by rabid animals, the disease is painful and dangerous. You will most likely die if you are not treated properly within 48 hours of being bitten.

  ①rattle snakes

  ②bedbugs

  ③bears

  ④spiders

  ⑤rabid animals

  A. ①④

  B. ②③

  C. ③⑤

  D. ②④

  59. What can we infer from the 3rd paragraph?

  A. All spiders are dangerous and one bite from each of them can be very serious. .

  B. The black widow spider is actually beneficial to humans.

  C. Spiders always make themselves comfortable in quiet place in your house.

  D. One should squash a spider at first sight to keep safety.

  60. In the author’s opinion, __________.

  A. No matter what kind of animal bites you, there is no danger at all.

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.

  ●Recite and repeat in conversation.

When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.

●Ask the other person to recite and repeat.

You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.

  ●Admit you don’t know.

Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say. “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”

  ●Use associations.

Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: “Vicki Cheng-tall, black hair.” To reinforce your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.

●Limit the number of new names you learn at one time.

When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning first names. Last names can come later.

  ●Go early.

Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometime just a few people show up on time. There’re fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to other an automatic review for you.

61.How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?

  A. They will be moved.

  B. They will be annoyed.

  C. They will be delighted.

  D. They will be discouraged.

  62.If you can’t remember someone’s name, you may ________.

  A. tell him the truth

  B. tell him a white lie

  C. ask him for pity

  D. ask others to help you

63.When you meet a group of people, it is better to remember ________.

  A. all their games

  B. a couple of names first

  C. just their last names

  D. as many names as possible

64.What does the text mainly tell us?

If a city wishes to host the Olympics, it must submit a proposal(提交提案) to the IOC. After all proposals have been submitted, the IOC votes. If no city with the fewest votes is eliminated, the voting continues, until a majority winner is determined. Typically the Games are awarded several years in advance, allowing the winning city time to prepare for the Games.

In selecting the site of the Olympic Games, the IOC considers a number of factors, and chiefly among them is which organizing committee seems most likely to stage the Games effectively. The IOC also considers which parts of the world have not yet hosted the Games. For instance, Tokyo, the host of the 1964 Summer Games, and Beijing, that of the 2008 Games, were chosen in part to popularize the Olympic movement in Asia. Because of growing importance television worldwide, the IOC in recent years has also taken into account the host city’s time zone. Whenever the Games take place in the USA or Canada, for example, American television networks are willing to pay specially higher amounts for television rights because they can broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hours.

Once the Games have been awarded, it is the duty of the local organizing committee----not the IOC or the NOC of the host city’s country to provide them with money. This is often done with a part of the Olympic television revenues(收入), and corporate sponsorships(社团赞助), tickets sales, and other smaller revenue sources. In many cases there is also direct government support. Although many cities have achieved amounts of money by hosting the Games, the Olympics can be financially risky. When the financial gains from the Games were less than expected, the city was left with large debts.

  66. _______will be determined to host the Olympic Games by the IOC.

  A. A city that submits a proposal

  B. A majority winner in voting

  C. A city that has perfect time zone

  D. One that hasn’t hosted the Games

  67. Which of the following words can be used to replace the word “ selecting” in paragraph 2?

  A. electing

  B. hoping

  C. choosing

  D. thinking

  68. If the Games take place in Canada, American television networks___.

  A. can’t broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hours

  B. will be forbidden to broadcast live sporting events

  C. are willing to pay much higher amounts for television rights

  D. will not pay for the Canadian television networks

  69. According to the last paragraph, which following statement is true?

  A. The host city must be left with large debts

  B. The city may achieve a lot of money

  C. There is no financial risk in hosting the Olympic Games

  D. It is impossible that the host city couldn’t make money

  70. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

  A. How to host Olympic Games

  B. Winner or loser

  C. Applying for host for Olympics

  D. The Olympic Games

Health experts are calling for action to increase cancer care and control in the developing world. A medical research paper says cancer was once thought of as a problem mostly in the developed world. But now cancer is a leading cause of death and disability in poor countries as well. Experts from Harvard University and other organizations urge the international community(社区)to fight cancer actively, saying it should be fought in the way HIV/AIDS has been fought in Africa.

Cancer kills more than 7.5 million people a year worldwide. Almost two-thirds are in low-income(收入) and middle-income countries. They discover cancer kills more people in developing countries than AIDS, tuberculosis (肺结核) and malaria (疟疾) combined. But the world spends only 5% of its cancer resources in those countries.Felicia Knaul from Harvard Medical School was one of the writers of the paper. She was in Mexico when she was found to have breast cancer. She received treatment there and her experience showed her the sharp difference between the rich and the poor in treating breast cancer.

Felicia Knaul says, “And we are seeing how this is attacking young women. It’s the number two cause of death in Mexico for women thirty to fifty-four. All over the developing world, it’s the number one cancer-related death among young women. I think we have to again say that there is much more we could do about it than we are doing about it.”

Professor Knalul met community health workers during her work in developing countries. They were an important part of effortsto reduce deaths from the cancer. They were able to persuade people to get tested to prevent the illness. The experts say cancer care does not have to be costly. For example, patients can be treated with lower-cost drugs.

  阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写在横线上(请注意问题后的词数要求)

[1]I don't know about you, but I look a lot older than I really am. Now I know I could solve much of that by coloring my hair with some product like "Just for Men", but I refuse to go there just yet. But it really gets upsetting sometimes. For example, at my brother's wedding four years ago, the photographer thought I was his father. Really, I'm not kidding.

[2]And just a few weeks ago, I was a riding in a car with another one of my brothers when he stopped to pick up his paycheck. Anyway, his boss saw me in the car and asked him if _______. Now, he only saw me from a distance, but it still hurt. Again, I'm not making this up.

[3]So I've decided to fight this battle in my own way. Since I obviously look old, I'm going to act young to compensate(弥补) for it .So what I am doing to act young? Well, it all has to with the way I move around.

[4]First, I try to walk faster than everyone else. That one is not a big deal for me, as I've always had a tendency to walk fast. It is a family trait(特性).

[5]Second, I try to use quick movements. That means getting up from a sitting position quickly, sitting down quickly, lying down quickly, getting up from a lying position quickly, changing directions quickly, turning quickly, etc. Now this one presents a little more of a challenge to me. I have to be careful not to hurt or damage a sensitive body part.

[6]Of course, if all of that doesn’t work, there’s always the “Just for Men.”

By 2017, there will be approximately 30 volunteers to be selected worldwide to get involved in the plan of the Mars migration.

The qualified volunteers, aging 18 at least, are required to develop the mindset to not only stay on the Mars forever but also keep good relationship with others. The experts hold the view that with the tough living conditions, Mars will present these volunteers with such formidable obstacles as severe coldness, unbearable loneliness and suffocating fear. However, volunteers consider it a good chance to experience a remarkably different life on Mars as well as to get rid of the mundane life on earth.

And most importantly, they will be regarded as human's heroes if they achieve this astonishing feat.

M: $24,500. It only has 10,000 miles on it.

W: No wonder it looks like new. Does that mean you don’t have to take the train to work anymore?

M: Yes! It’ll be nice to drive to work. Want to go for a ride?

  W: Sure!

  (Text 7)

W: Hello! What can I do for you?

M: Hi! I bought this stereo last month, but there’s a problem with it.

W: Could you tell me what the problem is?

M: Well, it doesn’t work; it can’t play CDs. I don’t know why.

W: Sorry for all the trouble. Let me have a look. Hmm… I can’t see what might be wrong. Oh, do you have your receipt with you?

  M: Yes, here you are.

W: Thank you. Do you want your money back, or would you like to exchange it?

M: I think I’d like to just get another one, please.

W: OK. Here’s a receipt for store credit. Just take it back to the stereo section and one of our salesmen will help you.

  M: Thanks a lot.

  (Text 8)

W: Well, Bob White, what a surprise! It’s nice to see you here!

M: Hello, Sophia! My gosh! How long has it been? Wasn’t it five years ago that we graduated?

W: I think you’re right. How are you doing? Are you married?

M: Yes, and I have a one-year-old boy. How about you?

W: Still single, nothing special. Tell me more about your wife.

M: She is a housewife, though recently she’s been going to night school on Mondays and Thursdays. She’s studying French now. Last year she studied typing and sewing. I think she just enjoys going to school. Next it’ll probably be cooking.

W: How nice for her. Oh, I’m sorry, I’ve got to rush. Say hello to Mrs. White for me.

  M: I sure will. Bye.

  (Text 9)

W: Darling, we have only one towel.

M: Shall I call room service?

W: Yes, and tell them to send up some breakfast to our room too.

M: OK. What would you like for breakfast?

W: I think I’ll have some toast, a boiled egg, and coffee with cream.

M: But you usually have only a cup of milk for breakfast at home.

W: Well, when you don’t have to cook, you enjoy the meal more. Don’t you think so?

M: Yes. You always do so much for our family, dear. That’s why I always wanted you to have a holiday. You need a little relaxation.

W: You’re the most considerate husband in the world.

M: Thank you, and you are the most perfect wife in the world.

W: You’re too sweet, you know. Oh, can you help me with the hot water? I want to take a shower, but I don’t know how to turn the hot water on. I’ve never seen equipment like that in a bathroom before.

  Text 10)

Food for astronauts has always been a problem. US scientists hope to grow vegetables in mini-greenhouses on the Moon in order to provide astronauts with fresh vegetables in the future.

The plan is to send a small greenhouse into space in 2017. The greenhouse will contain cabbage seeds. Since this kind of vegetable can go from seed to flower in just 14 days, it can complete its life cycle in just one night on the Moon.

The Moon greenhouse plan has been compared to an experiment at the South Pole. The South Pole greenhouse, now in its fifth year, allows workers living in the coldest place on Earth to have tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries and herbs.

“Living on the Moon seems so far away, but it is important that we do this research now,” said Jane Poynter, the president of Paragon, a company that works with NASA.
