Last year, I would read more than one book a month easily. I also knew the first book I would read this year would be a Christmas gift, “ We Are The Ants” by Shaun David Hutchinson.

This book was recommended to me by a long-time friend. She told me “it’s really sad.” Within the first chapter, we learn that Henry has been regularly abducted (绑架) by aliens since he was thirteen years old. The aliens usually just do strange experiments on him, but they recently communicate with him that the world is going to meet its end. They give him the choice to either press a button and save the world or not press it and the world will end on January 20th, 2018. Henry’s entire life is already falling apart. With his mother seriously ill and his girlfriend dying a year ago, he decides not to press the button.

I thought I knew what I was going to get when I picked up this book but it’s nothing like I could imagine. The self-discovery, existential crises(生存危机), and romance don’t seem like it would fit so well with alien abductions, but this book proved that wrong.

I could sit here and type out the entire story of the book, but you would still be missing out on the experience of reading it. There is such a wide range of emotions. “We Are The Ants” made me feel, and that is one of the reasons why I enjoyed this book so much.

I’m really happy that this was my first book of the year and I am already starting on book number two. The hardest part of reading is starting, so try reading even just one book this year. It’s good for you.

  41. Why did the author choose to read “We Are The Ants”?

  A. Because the book is a bestseller.

  B. Because his friend recommended it.

  C. Because he was interested in its theme.

  D. Because the book is written by his friend.

  42. Which of the following is correct about the story of “ We Are The Ants”?

  A. The aliens decide to kill Henry on January 29th, 2016.

  B. The aliens have imprisoned (囚禁)Henry since they caught him.

  C. Henry’s girlfriend was killed by the aliens.

  D. Henry met aliens when he was thirteen.$

  43. The aliens force Henry to choose whether to ___________.

  A. destroy his world

  B. help them

  C. accept their experiments

  D. end his own life

  44. According to the author, the book actually made him_________.

  A. touched

  B. amused

  C. surprised

  D. disappointed

  45. In the fourth paragraph, the author _____________.

  A. suggests that we should read the book

  B. repeats the main theme of the book

  C. expresses his desire to read the book once more

  D. lists his doubts about the book

  C

Musicals are magical. They are one of the best forms of expressive art, but they often go under appreciated. Of course, musicals are not everyone’s cup of tea. Still, Broadway’s magic cannot be ignored. Musicals combine several aspects that come together to not only entertain and tell a story, but also inspire audiences.

One example of how musicals inspire the audience is the show “Wicked”. It tells the story of the Wicked With(女巫), Elphaba, who struggles to find her way in a world that judges her because of her looks (because of her green skin). One of its best-known songs, “Defying Gravity,” expresses the need to break away from the rules and limits others have set in order to chase(追逐) one’s dreams. This show stresses the importance of individuality and never giving up in case of difficulty.

Musicals always try to pass positive messages on to audiences. They are aimed to inspire audiences and follow the age-old tradition of showing important ideas to the audience in order to teach them something---- also known as the basis for all theatre.

Entertainment(娱乐) is the other important thing. The aesthetic(美感) of the stage can be extremely important in making lessons and ideas clearly understood, while also providing something entertaining for people to simply enjoy.

Yet the music itself is the center piece for all of this, as it’s in the name: musical. Having noticed inspirational themes in musicals, we must understand that inspiration is also paired with the feeling of being emotionally moved. Musicals appeal to our emotions through songs. They reach down deep into our hearts and pour out the simplistic, yet complex, feelings of human nature. Above all else that is why musicals are an amazing high point in artistic expression.$

Musicals should have more recognition than they get, because they give the world their all --- their ideas, art and most important of all: a lesson on what it means to be a human.

  46. The show “Wicked “ sends a message that we should ________.

  A. always follow the social rules

  B. give up individuality to solve conflicts

  C. listen to people’s judges with an open mind

  D. keep individuality and chase our dreams bravely

  47. What’s the basis of all theatre?

  A. Make money from the audience.

  B. Provide entertainment for the audience.

  C. Teach the audience by showing important ideas.

  D. Protect age-old traditions.

  48. Which is the most important aspect of musicals?

  A. Music.

  B. The story.

  C. Performance

  D. The aesthetic of the stage

  49. We can infer from para.5 that musicals _________.

  A. are actually the best form of expressive art

  B. have the power to touch both our minds and hearts

  C. try to bring humans back to their natural simplicity

  D. focus on exploring the complex feelings of human nature

  50. Which is the best title of this passage?

  A. Classic Musicals of Broadway.

  B. Why Musicals Are Amazing.

  C. Musicals are not Everyone’s Cup of Tea.

  D. Why Musicals Often Go under Appreciated.

hotels.com found that London taxis beat others all over the world to head the list for the third running years. London taxi drivers were voted both friendliest and most knowledgeable. Drivers in the English capital must pass a rigorous examination called The Knowledge. Through strictly followed rules, drivers can earn the taxi license.

New York’s yellow taxis came second in the list, which was up 10 percentage points from last year. Travelers said it was most convenient to take taxis in New York.

Taxi drivers in Rome were voted the worst ones in the world. Almost one in ten travelers thought the Italian capital had the world’s worst taxi drivers when it came to the quality of driving.

“Traveling by taxi is one of the first experiences that many travelers have when they arrive in a new city. In fact, taxis are by far the most popular means of traveling from the airport to their hotel,” a spokesman for hotels.com said in a statement. In the survey, the global study scored taxis on their levels of cleanliness, value, quality of driving, knowledge of the area, friendliness, safety and availability.

Among the top five cities were Tokyo with a total score of 26 percent, Berlin with 17 percent, and Bangkok scoring 14 percent. Madrid’s taxis were ranked sixth in the survey, followed by Copenhagen and Dublin with 11 percent and Frankfurt and Paris with 10 percent.

Taxis in Sydney failed to reach the top 10, scoring badly in the areas of value for money, availability and knowledge of the area.

’s worse, many drivers don’t obey the traffic rules. To some extent, their irresponsible behaviors result in traffic

jams. It’s high time for us to take effective measures to improve the traffic conditions. To begin with, government should broaden the road to make more cars pass through. Secondly, people should be encouraged to go by bus or bike instead of private cars, which will definitely reduce the air pollution as well. Finally, to avoid the rush hour, it’s also a good idea if the going- home time is different. For example, put off or bring forward the time. I think these measures will be of great use to us.

In a word, I believe that we can improve our traffic conditions if we try our best.
