Anders Behring Breivik was sentenced to 21 years in prison Friday morning in an Oslo courtroom for his twin terror attacks in Norway last year.
The sentence means that Mr. Breivik, 33 years old, is regarded to have been in a sane state of mind at the time he committed the brutal actions.
Mr. Breivik, dressed in a dark suit and charcoal-colored necktie, smirked as the verdict was read against him in a packed courtroom. He was surrounded by a crowd of his victims and family members of those killed on July 22, 2011.
Before the judge read the sentence, Mr. Breivik launched his trademark right wing salute, thrusting his right arm in the air while making a fist. Much of the nation was watching the sentence on live television.
The terror attack, in which Mr. Breivik killed eight people with a car bomb in Oslo and 69 people in a shooting spree on Utoya 40 kilometers to the northeast, is the worst such attack on Norwegian soil. Over the course of a 10-week trial this summer, prosecutors worked to determine if Mr. Breivik was sane.
If Mr. Breivik was judged to be insane, he would have been sent to a psychiatric institution rather than to prison. Such a decision-while supported by prosecutors-likely would have enraged many Norwegians and victims groups who wanted the maximum prison term.
Mr. Breivik has openly admitted to his acts, claiming to be a right-wing political terrorist. In Norway, a preventive detention sentence can be prolonged for five years at a time, for as long as the convicted person is seen as a menace to society. This means that Mr. Breivik could be locked up for the rest of his life.
'The decision is unanimous,' said judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen, who read the verdict's conclusion Friday morning. She was one of five judges on the panel determining Mr. Breivik's fate.
Mr. Breivik said he acted in self-defense, to protect what he perceived as Norwegian culture against the influence from immigrants.
