近日，“2012中国城镇化高层国际论坛”在上海顺利举行。来自世界各地的500多名政府领导及城市规划负责人共聚一堂，分享成功经验，讨论中国城市和城镇居民的未来。

Supporting sustainable urbanization - In China, the trend toward urbanization has been both remarkable and challenging. Remarkable, for the sheer speed at which it has occurred, and challenging for the many problems that are accompanying it: environmental degradation, inadequacy of municipal and social services, and increasing inequality, to name just a few.

支持可持续城镇化——在中国，城镇化取得了卓越的成就，但同时也面临着严峻的挑战。卓越的成就是指中国城镇化的速度很快，而严峻的挑战指的是城镇化过程中涌现出的问题很多，比如环境恶化、市政服务和社会服务贫乏，以及不断加剧的社会不公平现象等。

上面报道中的sustainable urbanization就是“可持续城镇化”，是一种注重长远发展的城镇化理念，指不以资源大量消耗和环境严重污染为代价的平稳发展。Sustainable这个词的意思就是“可持续的”，由这个词组成的其他固定说法还有sustainable growth
