Greece is to hold a snap general election, likely to beon September 20, just weeks after securing a new $86bn bailout deal with its internationalcreditors.

Fresh elections, called by prime minister Alexis Tsipras on the very first day of the bailoutprogramme, will plunge Greece back into short-term political uncertainty.

Mr Tsipras announced the decision on national television, saying the governing coalition —formed by Syriza and the small right-wing Independent Greeks party after the previouselection in January — would resign, making way for an interim administration to overseethe election. “The political mandate of the January 25 elections has exhausted its limits andnow the Greek people have to have their say, he said.

The poll campaign is expected to delay implementation of fiscal and structural reformsagreed with creditors since the interim government will lack a mandate to take decisions.

But Nicolas Véron, senior fellow at Brussels-based think-tank Bruegel, said: “While theelection is disruptive in the short term, the likelihood is that it will result in a coalition that isless dysfunctional than the one we have now, and better able to provide stability inimplementing the reform programme.’’

Mr Tsipras’ decision to call an election came hours after the finance ministry announced thatthe European Stability Mechanism, the EU rescue fund, had approved disbursement of 13bnfrom the new bailout package — the third Greece has required. The sum was enough to coverfunding needs for the next two months.
