BEIJING, Jan. 16 -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Thursday called for more efforts to foster a positive and healthy social and cultural environment in 2020.

Huang Kunming, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, stressed innovative measures and improved systems in the fight against pornography and illegal publications at a national teleconference.

Authorities should severely punish the online spread of pornographic information and make the Internet a cleaner space, he said.

Huang stressed the importance of combatting illegal publications for children, copyright infringement, and fake journalists and unauthorized news outlets, calling for "resolute elimination of cultural garbage."

Several institutions and individuals were commended for their performance in the sector at the conference.
