PPR, headed by billionaire Fran ois-Henri Pinault, is looking to buy more Chinese luxury brands after the French group made its first acquisition in the country which has become the main growth motor for luxury goods companies, writes Scheherazade Daneshkhu.
法国奢侈品集团巴黎春天(PPR)在中国完成首笔收购之后,目前又在寻求收购更多的中国奢侈品牌。中国现已成为驱动奢侈品类企业业绩增长的主要引擎。巴黎春天总部位于巴黎,老板是亿万富翁弗朗索瓦·亨利·皮诺特(Fran ois-Henri Pinault)。
The Paris-based group said on Sunday night that it had bought Qeelin, a Hong Kong-based jeweller, for an undisclosed amount.
巴黎春天周日晚间宣布,已收购香港珠宝商麒麟珠宝(Qeelin),但未公布收购金额。
The jeweller was founded in Paris in 2004 by designer Dennis Chan and French entrepreneur Guillaume Brochard. It has 14 shops of which 11 are in China and Hong Kong and three in Europe. Asia represents 75 per cent of its sales.
2004年,设计师陈瑞麟(Dennis Chan)和法国企业家纪尧姆·布罗查德(Guillaume Brochard)在巴黎成立了麒麟珠宝。该公司共有14家门店,其中11家位于中国大陆和香港,3家位于欧洲。麒麟珠宝来自亚洲的销售额占比高达75%。
Alexis Babeau, head of PPR’s luxury division, which includes Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, indicated yesterday that Qeelin’s annual sales were about €30m. Analysts estimated the group, which has 50 employees and sells pieces that retail between €2,000 and €30,000, had an enterprise value of €75m.

“Qeelin is a small brand but has a great potential for development, said Mr Babeau. “We’ll also be looking for midsized companies in China with a strong identity and strong growth prospects, if the opportunity arises.

PPR has been on the hunt for a jewellery business to add to its Boucheron brand in its luxury division, which is dominated by leather goods and ready to wear.

It is looking for acquisitions to bolster its fledgling lifestyle business, which includes Puma sportswear and Volcom, the sports and surfwear group.

The acquisitions are being funded by the ongoing sale of PPR’s mass market retail businesses – Redcats, the catalogues group, and Fnac, the music and books business, which is to be spun off next year.

Mr Pinault’s strategy is to target small or midsized brands with the aim of expanding them rapidly as PPR has done with Bottega Veneta, the leather goods maker, and Balenciaga.

Mr Babeau said that Bottega Veneta had increased its sales 11-fold since its acquisition in 2001 and Alexander McQueen’s sales had risen 12 times since the fashion label entered the group at around the same time.

Mr Pinault said the group had “great ambitions for Qeelin, which will include opening up more stores round the world.
