My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.

Still, the firefighter’s first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: “Your son is OK.”

When I got to the river, I immediately saw the fire truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel across his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.

I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked.

“Yeah,” was all he said. My eyes begged for an explanation, but I didn’t get it from my son, who tends to play his cards close to his chest.

The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.

In an age in which the word “hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who makes it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centered, but that didn’t mean they have no desire to do good.

Still shocked by my son’s daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him - but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were,

  “What’s for supper?”

I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day.

  1. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?

  A. He is the best swimmer of their city.

  B. The water of the river is too shallow.

  C. There are many lifeguards to offer help.

  D. The rocks can be of help if there’s danger.

  2. The underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his vest” probably means____.

  A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids

  B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks

  C. Anton always has a desire to help others

  D. Anton likes playing cards.

  3. In the mother’s eyes, what her son did was ______.

  A. dangerous but interesting

  B. stupid and shameful

  C. unexpected and courageous

  D. awful and mean

Every year during the graduation famous people will talk to thousands of students and their parents. But this time something strange has happened. Each of the big-name speakers seems to speak of the same topic; they are all telling graduates to make the world a better place.

So there was Arianna Huffmgton at Smith College saying "what I advise you to do is not just take your place at the top of the world, but to change the world " The actress Kerry Washington told students at George Washington University: "The world needs your voice, every one of you." And then this, from Jeff Immelt, head of General Electric, at the University of Connecticut: "Graduates should be optimistic; believe in better. The world waits for your power."

Anyone can know what the famous speakers said is meaningless. The world has 7 billion voices to listen to already-it won't matter about one more or less. Neither is it clear why graduates should be especially optimistic, especially at the moment. The world doesn't wait for their power; only a small number of people will get the chance to lead anything.

Only Barack Obama in his address at Morehouse College avoided encouraging anyone to change the world. That is because he alone knows how hard it is to change it-even if you happen to be President of the United States. Not only has he failed to change the world, he can't even get people to give up guns in his own country.

Instead of aiming so impossibly high, the graduates of 2017 would do better to start a bit lower. When they leave their universities it will not "Hello world!" but "Hello again, Mum and Dad!" So what Ms Huflington, Mr. Obama and Mr. Immelt ought to have said was: change the world if you must, but it would be nice if you could help out by changing the bag in the rubbish basket first.

They should then have followed up with the importance of hard work. Graduates need to change their employment attitude. They need jobs. Sadly on commencement addresses(毕业典礼) no one tells them that even a bad job is better than none at all.

  4. The author mentions what the three famous people said in the second paragraph to _______

  A. report how honest their addresses were

  B. show the topics of their addresses are the same

  C. report the differences among their addresses

  D. show his suggestion on their addresses

  5. What does the author argue in the third paragraph?

  A. The world has 7 billion voices to listen to.

  B. Graduates should be especially optimistic.

  C. The world doesn't wait for graduates' leadership.

  D. the words that the famous speakers said have no meaning.

  6. What is the author's attitude towards what big-name speakers said?

  A. Negative

  B. Surprised

  C. Supportive

  D. Respectful

  7. What might be difficult for the graduates according to the author?

  A. Changing their life attitude.

  B. Saying "Hello" again to their parents

  C. Getting a good job with a high pay.

  D. Changing the bag in the rubbish basket.

London taxis, with their friendly drivers who actually know where they are going, are ranked best in the world, according to an annual taxi poll(调查).The survey by travel website hotels.com found London taxis, despite being the most expensive, on the top list for the third years in a row, scoring a total of 59 percent in votes by travelers.

London taxi drivers were voted both friendliest and most knowledgeable. Drivers in the English capital must pass a rigorous examination called The Knowledge to earn their taxi license.

The rising level of noise in urban areas may be preventing some species of songbirds from setting up homes in developed areas, a study has concluded.

Canadian researchers found that noisy surroundings masked the lower frequencies of bird songs, affecting the way some species communicated. Unable to hear all elements of a song, females tended to regard singing males as ill-suited mates(配偶).

“We sometimes find areas within cities that have what seem like suitable habitats, yet we get less diversity (of songbirds). So we wanted to investigate whether there was link between bird diversity and noise levels or not,” said co-author Darren Proppe at Calvin College, US.

In order to do this, the team surveyed species at 113 sites in natural areas within the city of Edmonton. What they found was that the number of species at each location tended to be lower when noise levels were higher.

The study also focused on seven species that did inhabit the areas to see if their abundance was affected as urban noise increased. The species that were selected met a number of criteria, including relative commonness across the study area and forest or forest-edge dwelling (住处).

“What we found is that three of the species did have lower abundances in locations that were noisier,” Proppe explained. “This could be down to the fact that those lower frequencies could be overlapped (叠盖住) by the dominant frequencies of road noise, resulting in a masking of communication between birds.”

Birdsongs and how female birds accept them are critical when they select male birds as mates. Proppe suggested that females may consider songs abnormal if they cannot hear their lower frequencies and, over a period of time, this could have a potential impact on the population of the species. If adults are not pairing and mating then the number of offspring could decrease as a result.

  12. What does the underlined word “masked” mean in Paragraph 2?

  A. Hid.

  B. Destroyed.

  C. Influenced.

  D. Made bigger.

  13. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?

  A. The seven species the researchers focused on were chosen casually.

  B. Noise affects female songbirds’ decisions about whom they choose as mates.

  C. The species in noisy places have lower abundances because their health suffers.

  D. Noise levels never change the way that songbirds communicate with each other in Edmonton.

  14. Which of the following is the best title for the article?

  A. Darren Proppe and his new findings.

  B. How female birds select male birds.

  C. Why developing areas have fewer birds.

  D. Higher noise level, lower songbird population.

  15. Which best describes Darren Proppe’s tone in the last paragraph?

  A. Critical.

  B. Hesitant.

  C. Worried.
