It takes more than just practice to become an Olympian. Gold medal performances require some serious nutrition. Have you ever wondered what these successful athletes eat to stay in peak shape?

Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian and founder of Nutritious Life Meals, appeared on “Good Morning America” today to give you a glimpse into the diets of some top athletes. Some of their meals could surprise you.

Managers and office busybodies might be keen on a clean desk--but it seems that in terms of productivity, they could have it all wrong. A messy desk can actually lead people towards clearer thinking, say researchers from Germany.

The researchers found in a series of linked studies- using a messy desk and a messy shop front ---that people actually thought more clearly when all around was chaos, as they sought to simplify the tasks at hand. That is ,visual and mental clutter(杂乱)forces human beings to focus and think more clearly. For instance, famous thinkers and writers such as Albert Einstein and Roald Dahl have been notorious for their untidy desks.

“Messy desks may not be as detrimental as they appear to be, as the problem-solving approaches they seem to cause can boost work efficiency or emhance employees’ creativity in problem solving,” say the authors.

Oddly, the effect seems to work most on conservatives-political liberals are less liable to be worried about mess in the first place, say the researchers.

“Business and government managers often promote ‘clean desk’ policies to avoid disorganized offices and messy desks, for the purpose of boosting work efficiency and productivity.” Writes a researcher, Jia Liu of the University of Groningen, “This practice is based on the conventional wisdom that a disorganized and messy environment can clutter one’s mind and complicate one’s judgments”

“However, not all evidence supports this conventional link between a messy environment and a messy mind”. The scientists tested people’s response in various’messy’environments, including a messy shop front, a disorganized desk, and even a work environment where a language task’reminded’people of messiness.

The authors found in the series of six studies that people tended towards simplicity in their thinking.

“They categorized products in a simpler manner, were willing to pay more for a T-shirt that depicts a simple-looking picture, and sought less variety in their choices”, said the researchers.

6...According to the text, a proper way to lead people towards clearer thinking is to

  .

  A.make a list of priorities

  B.simplify the tasks at hand

C.follow famous people D.mess up their mind

7..Why did the author take Albert Einstein and Ronald Dahl for example?

A.To tell readers untidy desks can make you as famous as celebrities.

B.To convince readers that untidiness is not all that bad.

C.To inform readers of one way to success-untidy desks.

D.To attract readers and show the author’s wide range of knowledge.

8...Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.A messy environment will certainly lead to a messy mind.

B.A clean environment will do great harm to work efficiency.

C.People tend to clear up the mess before thinking clearly.

D.All people are not in favor of “clean desk” in the office.

9...The underlined word “detrimental” probably means

  .

A.The messier the desks are, the more efficient the employees are.

C.We should make our office messy to improve our work efficiency.

D.Clean desks can boost the employees’ productivity and creativity.

Anger at the practice of demanding dowries, which can lead to violence against brides, has prompted a take off of “Angry Birds” called “Angry Brides” that aims to highlight the illegal practice still prevalent in many South Asian countries.

Dowries-such as jewelry, clothes, cars and money-are traditionally given by the bride’s family to the groom and his parents to ensure she is taken care of in her new home.

The custom was outlawed more than five decades ago. But it is still widely practiced, with the groom’s family demanding even more money after marriage, leading to mental and physical annoyance that can drive the woman to suicide.

To play the game, users have to try and hit three dodging grooms--a pilot, a builder and a doctor. There are a variety of weapons to choose from, including a frying pan, broomstick, tomato and loafer.

Each groom has a price tag, starting at 1.5 million rupees($29,165). Every time the player hits a groom, his value decreases and money is added to the player’s Anti-Dowry Fund ,which is saved posted on their Facebook page.

“Since we launched the game last week, more than 270,000 people have liked the app. Both men and women seem to be playing it”, said Bhamidi.

Everyone wants to achieve true happiness in life. But the biggest factor holding most of us back is actually our own selves. The Huffington Post released a list of seven mistakes we need to let go of in order to become happier people. Let’s take a look.

  1. Placing too much emphasis on fulfillment (成就感)

Those who put a lot of pressure on themselves to be happy feel more lonely on a daily basis than those who do not, according to research conducted at the University of Denver, US.

  2. Keeping it all in

Keeping it all together during tough times can hurt you. Crying is the body’s emotional response to outside triggers (诱因). By suppressing it, you may be damaging your mental and physical health.

  3. Looking at your smart phone all the time

Connecting with others may be the key to happiness, but a recent University of Michigan study found that the more time participants spent on social networking sites, the less happy they felt.

  4. Not moving

It’s no secret that a healthy lifestyle is a big part of happiness. Something as simple as a walk can help you increase your creativity and expose you to essential vitamins.

  5. Not reflecting on the past

In a 2017 study on nostalgia (怀旧) and emotion, participants reported a higher sense of physiological (生理的) comfort when they looked back on the past. Affection for heartwarming memories helps people relate their past experiences to the present in order to create a greater sense of meaning.

  6. Resisting change

A study on the psychology of choices shows that the human brain naturally tries to avoid loss – but that resistance can cause stress. Whether it’s fear of the unknown or fear of losing what you currently have, the pressure to hold on to the present can harm your future life satisfaction.

  7. Not being mindful

Setting aside time for meditation (沉思) allows your body to relax, cultivates (培养) an attitude of gratitude (感恩) and lowers your stress level, according to researchers at University of California, Los Angeles, US.

16.. What is the main purpose of the article?

  A. To inform readers of the benefits of being happy.

  B. To explain why our happiness depends on our own actions.

  C. To point out the things we do that prevent us from being happy.

  D. To discuss some typical characteristics of happy people.

17.. The underlined word “suppressing” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.

  A. speaking of

  B. holding back

  C. thinking about

  D. taking no notice of

18.. According to the article, to be a happy person, it is important for us to ______.

  A. set goals and achieve as much as we can

  语法填空

My wonderful aunt Helen Louise recently passed away very unexpectedly. I have been trying to stay positive during this time. Today was an especially emotional day,

  45

I decided to try and keep myself busy by doing a little “treasure hunting” at my local Goodwill store.

While I was browsing, I saw a young girl trying to ride a bicycle. Her grandmother was very

  __46

(encourage) and it made me smile to see the determination on the little girl’s face.

I browsed through the shelves but didn’t find anything

  47

I wanted to buy. I was on the point of leaving

  48

  I noticed the bicycle

  49

(park) at the checkout counter. An idea occurred

  50

me and I asked the clerk if the bicycle

  51

(pay) for. She told me that the little girl’s grandparents were going to buy

  52

after they were done looking around. I quickly searched my purse for a Smile Card. I told the clerk I wanted to buy the bicycle for the girl. I paid, got the receipt and handed it, along with the Smile Card, to the girl’s grandmother. I told her about the bicycle.

  53

looks on that family’s faces were priceless and I could feel my aunt Helen’s

  54

  (approve) shining upon me.

I miss my aunt Helen every day, but I will continue to honor her legacy of generosity by doing some acts of kindness.

  改错

My daughter, who is thirteen, is not a emotional person. Imagine how surprising I was the other day when she told me that she had been given a school friend of hers a hug every day. That was why she realized the girl “wasn’t getting a lot love at home”. It seems that she not only reached out to her friends these days but to her teachers and other children as well as. I thought that was awesome! So, I gave she a card for her act of kindness and told her all for it. She liked the idea very much that she decided to find someone else to give the card so they could continue passing it forward
