LEEDS, England—A Leeds University psychology professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies.

"The hate we hold within us is a cancer, " Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart's first 20-week workshop in London—a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian- born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight.

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people. "People have lots of negative attitudes towards forgiveness," he said, "People confuse forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one."

Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.

"The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you are angry with," said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.

Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people "want to get free of the past".

Many Chinese high school students are fed up with their parents' nagging (唠叨). They think their parents' high expectations are a burden. But a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US, who also find their parents constantly annoying. The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese moms and dads.

Sixty-two per cent of Chinese fathers and 66 per cent of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age.

They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of the four countries.

Japanese mothers top the list with 76 per cent having high expectations, while 70 per cent of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly comparing them with other kids.

The survey of high school students' views of life in China, Japan, South Korea and the US, was held in 156 high schools in the four countries. More than 7,000 teenagers were questioned.

The survey also found that with the smallest burden, Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. They blame them less, and also receive less criticism (批评) than students from the other three countries.

However, satisfaction doesn't mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. They get the least praise from their parents and they don't feel able to express their unhappiness to them.

"Results from the survey show that despite different cultural backgrounds, generation gaps (代沟) exist in many countries other than China. It's even bigger elsewhere," said Sun Yunxiao, from the China Youth and Children Research Centre.

He said that Chinese parents are used to burying their feelings deep in their hearts. This makes their children not want to talk openly with them. "This survey shows that both parents and teenagers in China need to work on communicating and understanding each other."

Besides their family life, students were also questioned about their opinions on themselves and others in the world.

US students displayed more "individuality (个性)," with 88 per cent agreeing that "people should follow their own interests instead of those of others". Koreans were the next most independent, followed by the Chinese and Japanese.

But strong ambition (雄心) is observed in Chinese high schools. Only 41 per cent of high school students are content with "an average living", compared with Koreans at 48 per cent, the Japanese at 66 per cent and Americans at 72 per cent.

64.Why does the writer think Chinese high school students are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US?

  A. Because Chinese parents have less expectations of their children in the four countries

  B. Because Chinese high school students are happy at homes.

  C. Because Chinese high school students don’t have strong ambition.

  D. Because there isn’t generation gap in China

65.Whose parents expect the most of their children?

  A. Chinese mothers

  B. Japanese fathers

  C. Korean fathers

  D. Chinese fathers

66.The following topics are discussed in the passage except______.

  A. generation gap

  B. parents’ expectation

  C. independence

  D. cultural backgrounds

67.Which order can best describe the ambition the students have in the four countries?

  A. Korean students, Japanese students, American students, Chinese students,

  B. Chinese students, American students, Japanese students, Korean students

  C. Chinese students, Korean students, Japanese students, American students,

  D. Japanese students, American students, Korean students, Chinese students

The flag, the most common symbol of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.

The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.

Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.

Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.

These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked. The king of China around 1000 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.

  41. The best title for the passage would be “________”.

  A. Development of the National Flag

  B. Power of the National Flag

  C. Types of Flags

  D. Uses of Flags

  【答案】A

It is, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development.” 故选A。

  42. The underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

  A. impossible to make sure of

  B. likely to be protected

  C. easy to be damaged

  D. difficult to find

  【答案】C

Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats.” 而本句 “People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable.”

  43. The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because ________.

  A. they could tell direction

  B. they could bring good luck to ancient fighters

  C. they were handed down by the ancestors

  D. they were believed to stand for natural forces

Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods,……”“用一块布系到标杆顶部来判断风向比早期的办法更可靠。”

  44. What does the author know of the first national flag?

  A. He knows when it was sent to Europe.

  B. He believes it was made in Egypt.

  C. He thinks it came from China.

  D. He doubts where it started.

The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked.。”

  45. What will the author most probably talk about next?

  A. The role of China in the spread of the national flag.

  B. The second ancestor of the national flag.

  C. The use of modern flags in Europe.

  D. The importance of modern flags.

This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.”
