Energy independence. It has a nice ring to it. Doesn't it? If you think so, you're not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession.
“Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的)companion “energy security” are, however, slippery concepts that are rarely through, though. What is it that we want independence from, exactly?
Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil. But there are reasons that we buy all that oil from elsewhere.
The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流) of biofuel (生物燃料) available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.
Second, Americans have basically decided that they don't really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad. Vast areas of the United States are offlimits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to endure the environmental impacts of domestic energy production in order to cut back imports?
Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don't read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.
There is no question that the United States imports
a great deal of energy and,in fact, relies on that steady
flow to maintain its economy. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher prices,at the same time,we derive massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when
we engage in
energy
trade around the world.
1. What does the author think of biofuels?
A. They keep America's economy running healthily.
B. They prove to be a good alternative to petroleum.
C. They do not provide a sustainable energy supply.
D. They cause serious damage to the environment.
2. Why does America rely heavily on oil imports?
A. It wants to expand its storage of crude oil.
B. Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.
C. It wants to keep its own environment intact.
D. Its own oil production falls short of demand.
3. What does the author say about oil trade?
A. It proves profitable to both sides.
B. It improves economic efficiency.
C. It makes for economic prosperity.
D. It saves the cost of oil exploration.
1.解析:作者态度题。根据文章第四段的“...but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction”but后面的强调才是作者对于biofuels的真正想法——causing economic waste and environmental destruction。故选D项。
答案:D
2.解析:推理判断题。分析文章第五段的首句“Americans have basically decided that they don't really want to produce all their own oil.”美国人不愿意自己产油,是题干信息当中“America rely heavily on oil imports”的同义改写。根据下一句“They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad.”相比从国外进口石油,美国人更看重环境质量,由此判断,答案选C。
答案:C
3.解析:细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段的首句“there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency... we benefit”,可知选B项。
答案:B

What does it take to be a good neighbour? Over the years I have had all kinds of neighbours, ones that were enjoyable and others that were to be avoided at all costs.
One of the most important things in being a good neighbour is to respect tbe personal privacy (隐私). When someone new moves into the neighbourhood, you'd better wait and see when and how to go to pay a visit. If you go rushing over as soon as they move in, they may think you are going to be one of those neighbours that come over at all times of the day, not respecting their privacy.
It is a good idea always to be friendly to everyone in the neighbourhood. This can not only make you get along well with them, but will also be a form of protection for your family and home. If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out in their yard, it shows that you like them and try to be friendly. If you are cordial(热诚的) to them, they are much more likely to watch out for any wrong doings going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens.
Another way of being a good neighbour is to be helpful in times of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand doing something or in times of difficulty,it is good to offer your help. Even though you haven't talked a lot to the people down the street, they are willing to take the time to help you because you have ever helped them when they were in need.
In conclusion, if you respect their personal privacy, treat them cordially and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbour and anyone would be happy to have you next door!
4. What should we do when a new neighbour moves in?
A. Go to offer some advice.
B. Go to say hello immediately.
C. Wave politely through the window.
D. Wait and see when and how to pay a visit.
5. If we are always friendly to neighbours, we can __________.
A. have our own privacy
B. know more about their life
C. make close friends with them
D. keep our family members safe
6. What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B. Everybody sometimes gets into trouble.
C. The neighbours should help each other.
D. People needn't talk a lot to their neighbours.
7. As a good neighbour, a person should always be __________.
A. brave, honest and kind
B. helpful, strong and strict
C. honest, active and friendly
D. respectful, friendly and helpful
