  Three Boys and a Dad

Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months. "This will be like a walk in the park," he'd told his wife. "I'll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom."

Things started well, but just after eight o'clock, his three little "good kids"—Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted "breakfast, daddy." When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex's head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍). Mike chanted "Where's my toast, where's my toast," in the background. Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.

Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy's underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named "Not Me" had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.

By ten o'clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realized that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.

At exactly11:17, Brad called the daycare centre(日托所). "I suddenly have to go into work and my wife's away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes? " The answer was obviously "yes" because Brad was smiling.

  21. When his wife left home, Brad expected to __________.

     A. go out for a walk in the park

     C. enjoy his first day off work

     D. read the newspaper to his children

  22. Which of the following did Randy do?

     A. Drawing on the wall            B. Eating apple jam

     C. Feeding the fish.

  D. Reading in a room

  23. Why did Brad ask the daycare centre for help?

     A. Because he wanted to clean up his house.

     B. Because he suddenly had to go to his office.

     C. Because he found it hard to manage his boys.

     D. Because he had to take his wife back home.

  24. This text is developed _________.

     A. by space        B. by comparison       C. by process        D. by time

  B

Some say college is wasted on the young. So many of us look back at our own college years and realize what we could have done differently to make the most of them. While we can't go back, we certainly can offer our sons and daughters our best advice to help them make the right choices in college. Hopefully, they will have fewer regrets than we do. Following are five guidelines parents can share with their college-bound kids to put the whole experience in perspective.

  EDUCATION IS YOUR FIRST PRIORITY

As soon as you arrive on campus, there will be competing interests. Feel free to check them out but always remember that you are there first and foremost for your education. Go to class prepared and on time. Be engaged during class. Make sure your professor knows you and realizes that you care.

  BE RESPONSIBLE

There are many layers of responsibility. Do what you say you will do and, if you can't, own up to it early and communicate clearly. But being responsible isn't just about meeting your commitments; it is also about taking care of you, your body, and your friends. For example, more than 1800 college students die annually from alcohol-related injuries. Look out for yourself and other people. Make moderate(适度的), sensible decisions so you aren't affected by the consequences later.

  TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY

Incredible opportunities will present themselves: studying abroad, interning at a unique place, trying new things. Don't let fear prevent you from taking advantage of them. There may never be so much time or as many resources devoted to your betterment again in your life. Say yes to opportunities that will help you grow.

  FIND AND BE A MENTOR(良师益友)

Some of the best lessons available to us can come outside of the classroom in the form of a mentor. One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor. Early on, find someone on campus who you feel can help you grow and develop a relationship with him or her. Also find someone for you to mentor. You will reinforce and enrich your own learning experience by teaching someone else.

  GET THE JOB DONE

It is natural to occasionally feel you want to quit, when it makes more sense to you to go find a full-time job. Resist that urge. As Jocelyn Negron-Rios, a mother of two, who is currently completing her degree, advises, "No matter how difficult it seems, keep at it because however insurmountable(难以对付的)it feels now multiply that by 10,000 and that is how it feels when you are in your thirties with a full-time job and a family and are trying to pursue a degree."

  25. According to the passage, the most important thing for college students is ______.

     A. taking part in different activities

     B. working hard to get a degree

     C. seizing every chance to try new things

     D. improving themselves by learning from the others

  26. Which of the following about college life is true?

     A. Passing on what you've learned in college can help you enrich your learning

  experience.

     B. Make sure that you are responsible for yourself rather than others.

     C. Professors will not assess your performances in class but the grades you get in exams.

     D. You can make full use of the opportunity whenever you want.

  27. What can we infer from the words said by Jocelyn in the last paragraph?

     A. Persistence is the key to success when you meet with difficulties in your learning

  process.

     B. It is better if you gain more working experience before you finish your education.

     C. As long as you work hard, you can gain a degree even when you are in your thirties.

     D. Youth is the best time to learn since you have less burden.

  28. What is the main purpose of the passage?

     A. To give some rules for the college students.

     B. To call on the students to make full use of college years.

     C. To summarize some tips for parents to share with their children.

     D. To analyze the benefits and difficulties of college life.

At the beginning of every year we promise ourselves we will live a healthier life, and exercise more. The year tarts with the best of intentions, but many times we are unable to keep up with very high goals. Good news is that a healthy lifestyle is achievable and it's all about making small changes that make a difference.

News on healthy lifestyles says that the key is moderation and consistency. There are so many health and well-being products out there in the market promising many things. And although many may be true, select carefully.

The basics of a healthy lifestyle is maintaining a balanced diet and doing regular exercise. By eating well, it means really to make sure you include plenty of vegetables and fruit preferably in season in your diet, avoid fried and junk foods and foods high in sugar as well as processed foods. Eating fresh homemade meals rather than ready-made meals, which are high in salt and sugar, is always the better option. Reducing alcohol intake, drinking plenty of water and supplementing your diet with healthy snacks like nuts and seeds.

For external care choose natural skin care products and hair care oil. Natural beauty care involves using natural moisturizers(保湿剂)like Argan oil, Coconut oil and Sweet Almond oil. These nourish(滋养) the skin far more than counter creams full of chemicals. Skin reflects what we put inside of us, so a healthy diet with plenty of greens and healthy protein will make your skin brighter.

Of course exercise is essential but the key is regular and consistent exercise. So walking three times a week for 45 minutes is much more beneficial than a binge workout once a week.

     B. the key to a healthy lifestyle is getting enough sleep

     C. food high in salt and sugar is the best choice for us

     D. we should walk once a day for a healthy lifestyle

  31. What can we learn from the passage?

     A. We cannot form a healthy lifestyle if we are busy.

     B. We can eat some junk food in order to save money.
