epend on Yourself
Depend on yourself is what nature says to everyone. Parents, teachers and others can all help us, but they only help us to help ourselves and make men of us.
There have been many great men in history. Though many of them were very poor in their childhood with no one to depend on for an education, they set to work with all their determination to gain knowledge. Finally they worked their own way up to fame.
Thinking of all those self-made men around us, we are well aware of the importance of depending on oneself. What they have in common, in spite of the differences in their fields, is their determination to succeed in their careers and the spirit to depend on their own honest and earnest efforts. In fact, no one will achieve anything unless he depends on himself.

The Sport I like Best
Of all the sports, I like table-tennis best. I think it is not only a sport but also an art, because it is a game that needs strength and skill.
Some people think that playing table-tennis needs little strength, but I don't think so. In playing table-tennis, we should judge the direction of the ball, and hit it back with great strength so that we can win the game. At the same time we need to pick up the ball which falls to the ground. So after one game you will be very tired if you have tried your best.
But, as a sport, I think it is more like an art. In the game, you can often find the ball moving quickly, and each of the players' movements is very beautiful.
So I like the sport very much. Though I can't play it very well, I still show great interest in it. I think playing table-tennis can build our bodies, keep us healthy and train our brains. What's more, it an help us to learn to co-operate with each other. So I like it very much.

About Examination
I don't remember how many examinations I've taken since I began my schooling. To tell the truth, I don't like examinations at all. I dare say that, in fact, no student likes examinations.
We often hear people say Examinations are teachers' magic weapon, so most of us may think it is our teachers who give us students so many examinations. But I don't think so. Almost all of them have once been students before they became teachers. We don't like examinations, and neither do our teachers, which may be reasonably concluded. What's more, the more examinations we take, the more time will be taken from our teachers and the more trouble our teachers have to take.
It is the system in our country, I think, that gives us students so many examinations. If there were no entrance examinations, and all the students could go up to the higher grades without competition, there would not be so many examinations in primary and middle schools. So it is important and necessary to reform the test system. Only in this way can examinations be greatly reduced, and then all the students will be happier.

Safety First
Last January the New Year began on Thursday. I shall never forget that day because I almost died of fright.
My brother and I were walking down the road, followed by the dog. I was carrying a cake to a friend. My brother is a football fan, he carried a ball in hand.
A car came toward us. I thought that both the dog and my brother were safe, but suddenly the ball fell off my brother's hand and rolled to the middle of the road. Our dog ran after the ball. My brother ran to save our dog. Luckily the driver saw this, and was able to stop the car in time.
How pleased I was! Maybe our dog wanted to get the ball back for he often helps my brother.

Smoking is harmful
When you are in public places, you will see many smokers, most of whom are young people and even middle school students. It is said that in China smokers cover about 45 percent.
Why do so many people enjoy smoking? Some think that it is a pleasure, some believe that it can refresh themselves. In fact, smoking is a bad habit. It does great harm to our health, not only to the smoker himself, but also to others. For smokers, it is a great waste of money, and it causes many kinds of diseases. Besides, many fires are caused by careless smokers.
Today, more and more people are beginning to realize the harm of smoking and decide to give it up. If you are not a smoker, don't start.

Last Sunday my father and I went fishing along a river. We found the water so dirty that we could hardly catch fish in it.
A lot of factories along the river always poured their waste water and rubbish straight into the river which made the river water polluted. In this way most of the fish in the river were killed.
If the river water all over the country is polluted like this, no living things wil
