Italy has been a land of patrons and performers since the flushest days of the Medicis. Noble courts throughout the peninsula maintained private orchestras.

Long more popular than classical music in Italy, opera continues to boom. Some of the country's dowager opera houses have been refitted with modish new finery.

Even outside Milan and Rome, concerts are definitely a growth stock……Far from keeping audiences away, the widespread ownership of compact disc players and Walkman cassette players has actually brought down the average audience age.
