An iPhone case styled like a handgun caused chaos at an airport terminal in the Netherlands after it was mistaken for a real firearm.

Passengers at Schiphol suffered considerable delays and everyone had to be checked through security a second time after the police were called in investigate the item.

A woman and her boyfriend, both believed to be about 20-years-old, were pulled aside by police after fellow passengers noticed the unusual design.

Marten Blankesteijn, who was a passenger inside the terminal as the incident unfolded, took to Twitter to describe what happened.

Mr Blankesteijn wrote: 'I think it has something to do with a girl aged about 20 and her boyfriend. Had pictures but that I had to delete.

'Girl had a cell phone cover with a gun on it. Now checked and the phone does indeed show not to be able to shoot.'

Another passenger at the airport, @marcopoiclaudio, posted: 'Stuck at #Schiphol airport. All departures from M gates suspended, no info at all. We have no idea what's going on.'

A spokesperson for Schiphol Airport refused to comment, stating it was a matter for the security forces.

It took around two hours for the woman to be found, with flights also grounded while the police carried out their search.
