Streaming television surged, the broadcast networks slipped, and TV fans found plenty of reasons for celebration and sourness in the 66th Primetime Emmy nominations.

In the nominations announced Thursday morning, HBO's 'Game of Thrones' led the pack with 19 nods, followed by FX's 'Fargo' (18 nominations) and 'American Horror Story: Coven' (17).

The category's sole newcomer was HBO's 'True Detective.'

The list of drama nominees omitted highly acclaimed series such as 'The Good Wife' (CBS), 'The Americans' (FX) and 'Masters of Sex' (Showtime). Some critics blamed the perceived snubs on the inertia of Emmy voters, while others shrugged them off as a side-effect of an overabundance of high-quality television.

The Netflix insurgency gained steam, with the subscription video service racking up 31 nominations for its original programs, led by drama 'House of Cards' and comedy 'Orange Is the New Black.' Just two years ago, Netflix was barely on the radar of the TV Academy. Now, the company seems to have made itself at home with Emmy voters. Much of its roster of nominees came from the ensemble cast of 'Orange Is the New Black,' which had 12 nominations, more than any other comedy.

By comparison, HBO had 99 nominations. With 'The Sopranos' and 'Six Feet Under,' HBO once led the charge of cable networks that now dominate the top awards categories. However, none of the premium channel's dramas have won since 'The Sopranos' in 2007. In hopes of reasserting its clout, HBO entered its hit crime show 'True Detective' into the crowded drama field. It was a somewhat controversial move--some observers thought it should be categorized as a miniseries, because the show's cast, storyline and setting will be different next season.

They will compete against Bryan Cranston ('Breaking Bad'), Jon Hamm ('Mad Men'), Jeff Daniels ('The Newsroom') and Kevin Spacey ('House of Cards') .

First-time nominee Lizzy Caplan got the nod for her portrayal of Virginia Johnson on the Showtime series 'Masters of Sex.'

The four biggest broadcast networks all saw fewer total nominations than last year, though most still scored more than Netflix. The broadcasters received most of their recognition for reality shows and sitcoms, with past comedy winners 'The Big Bang Theory' and 'Modern Family' nominated once again.
