Women may appear to be more prevalent on social networks, but when it comes to using them for business purposes men have the upper hand. Men are 'savvier' when it comes to making professional connections in cyberspace, according to a study. Linkedin, the online network for professionals, analysed the connection data of its 100million members, both male and female. They found that men made more business connections than women. Nicole Williams, LinkedIn's Connection Director, said that the results may be due to women being more reluctant to network online.
One of these was the cosmetics industry, which saw male employees triumphing over their female counterparts when it came to networking.
However, women ruled the roost in areas such as the agriculture industry. LinkedIn experts suggested this could be because women have to work harder than men to get ahead in that traditionally male-dominated industry. In Britain, women were found to be better networkers in such areas as agriculture, think tanks, executive office and philanthropic industries; while men who worked in the supermarket industry, military, veterinary and medical industries were better networkers than women.
The findings have met with scepticism from some businesswomen.“I'll be the first to challenge that assumption,' said Donna Messer, who is head of the networking website ConnectUS Communications Canada. 'I believe there are many women who are just as good if not better than many at networking.''Men might tend to view online networking as a hunting expedition and concentrate on accumulating the most online connections,' she added. 'Women tend to equate networking with face-to-face meetings, so they probably do of that before moving on to another online contact.'
