For example, "revise" and "review" both carry the meaning of “复习” according to the dictionary. But I always find people having preference in using one than the other, and that makes me feel really confused.

For example, "revise" and "review" both carry the meaning of “复习” according to the dictionary. 上面听到的是 Eileen 提出的关于单词 revise 和 review 的问题。听 Eileen 说《你问我答》节目让她受益匪浅，我们很高兴。好了，下面我们就来看 Eileen 的问题。她说 revise 和 review 都有“复习”的意思。这个没错，不过要注意的是在英式英语中，表达“复习、温习”功课这个意思时，人们多用动词 revise，而在美式英语中，人们则更多的使用 review 来表示“复习”。咱们来看两个例句。

Examples

I have to revise for the maths exam tomorrow.

I have to review for the math exam tomorrow.

这两个例句仅仅是英式和美式的区分，意思是完全一样的。在表达“复习”时，review 即可以做名词也可以做动词。而 revise 的名词形式是 revision。我们来听用名词 review 和 revision 表示“复习”这个意思的例句。

下面我们来看 revise 和 review 这两个词的其它常用意思。先看 revise – 它最常用的一个意思是“修改、修正”文章或“改变、调整”一个想法。请听例句。

This is the fourth time Sally’s book publisher has asked her to revise her manuscript.

Having talked to my professor, I need to revise my original arguments about the issue.

上面第一个例句中的 revise 表达的意思是“修改原稿”；第二个例句中的 revise 说的是“改变对某事的看法”。接下来看 review – 它在做动词的时除了有“复习”的意思外，其它常用的意思包括“重新考虑，审核，评论”。先来看表示“重新或再次考虑”的例句。

The board has agreed to review the bonus pay policy.

董事会同意重新考虑奖金政策。

We need to review the project delivery deadline.

我们需要重新计划项目的最后交付期限。

再来听 review 做动词表达“审核、检查”的例句。

Examples

The tax department is going to review this company’s finances.

税务部门要审核这家公司的财务状况。

I need to review what's been done so far on this issue.

我需要查看到目前为止对于这个问题所采取的措施。

下面再来看 review 做动词表达“评论、评价”的例句。

Food critics have reviewed the newly-opened two Michelin star restaurant.

美食评论人士评价了新开业的米其林两星餐厅。

The new Bond film has been reviewed by newspapers worldwide.

新邦德影片受到了世界各地报纸所写的评论。

我们也可以把 review 当做名词来使用，其意思包括“新书、新上映的电影或戏剧的评论”，或“审查某事”还有“回顾过往事件”。请听例句。

I've just read the review of the new Harry Potter book.

The university is doing a review of its student interview selection process.
