Film or book, which do you prefer?
Last week our class held a discussion about the two art and cultural expression forms. Nowadays, many literary works have been adapted into a movie. Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow. Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful.
录音稿
(Text 1)
M: What usually happens when the fire alarm rings? Have you ever practiced what to do before?
W: Well, we just tell our students to leave the classroom as quickly as possible if they ever hear the alarm.
(Text 2)
W: Have you heard the news?
M: No, what happened?
W: A serious flood occurred in the province next to ours and over 100 people have lost their lives. The rescue has become more difficult because of the weather.
(Text 3)
M: Has anybody told you about Jessica’s birthday party?
W: I heard about it but I’m still waiting to get an invitation.
M: I got one from her earlier.
W: I’m guessing she’s giving me my invitation today or tomorrow. I invited her to my birthday party last month.
(Text 4)
W: I’m going to drive my car to work, instead of taking the company’s bus.
M: Really? I can just ride a bicycle, because where I work is not that far away.
W: Just a few miles?
M: Yeah, and using a bike saves my money on gas for my car.
(Text 5)
M: Hey, did you hear about the car crash that happened on the street near my home?
W: No, I didn’t! That’s surprising. You live in a very quiet neighborhood.
M: I know, right? It’s been the first traffic accident ever in my area.
W: I hope the people involved are okay.
M: I heard that no one was seriously injured.
(Text 6)
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes. I need to apply for a parking permit.
W: Are you a professor?
M: What? Are you kidding? I’m only 22 years old.
W: Yes, I’m kidding, but only professors and disabled students can apply for parking permits.
M: Yes, I know. I am disabled. My left leg was broken last year, and I still can’t walk well.
W: Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.
M: That’s all right. You didn’t see me walk up to the desk.
W: Here is the application form. I also need to see your student ID and your permission letter from the university.
M: Here you are.
(Text 7)
W: I really think if I can get my foot in the door at this company it will do wonders for my career. Do you think you can polish my interview materials?
M: Sure.
W: You know, I’ve researched the company and I think I’m perfect for the job but I’m just not sure how to get it.
M: Well, the most important thing is that you have to have confidence in the interview. Bosses look for people who are interested, enthusiastic and sure of themselves.
W: I know I have what it takes, but I’m worried that my work experience won’t be enough. Do you think I should lie about my experience? M: No, you should always be honest about your weaknesses. However, by focusing on your strong points and keeping a positive attitude about your abilities, you can take the attention off your lack of experience.
(Text 8)
W: John, when you were little, what did you dream you’d grow up to be?
M: Oh, I dreamed that I’d be a pilot when I grew up.
W: So what happened? Did you just lose interest in being a pilot?
M: No. My parents said it was too dangerous, and they wanted me to find a safer job. How about you? What did you dream of becoming when you were a little girl?
W: When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a great scientist, but now, as you can see, I’m just a common office clerk.
M: So what are your dreams now?
W: Well, I really want to be a translator some day, so I’m working hard to learn English.
M: You’re so good at language learning. Your French and Italian are already fluent. Well, I hope you succeed in that dream some day!
W: Thanks.
(Text 9)
W: Welcome to England, and I hope your visit here will be a pleasant one. I’d like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
M: Thanks.
W: UK drinking law forbids people under the age of 18 from buying alcohol, as well as friends from buying it for them.
M: Ah, yes. It’s the same in our country. What about smoking?
W: It is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you’re under 16.
M: That’s a good law. Most countries have many teens that smoke.
W: Yes, it has actually become a serious social problem for us here. Okay, the biggest thing you’ll need to watch out for is our traffic, as it’s quite different from in other countries. You should be careful when crossing the road, as the traffic moves on the left side of the road here. Always use the crossings for walking.
M: Yes, it’s really unique!
W: And don’t take any chances when crossing the road. I think the last thing you should be aware of is littering. It is against the law to throw away rubbish on the streets or in other public places. Whenever you have something to throw away, just put it in one of the litter bins along the road, or just put it in your pocket and throw it away at home.
M: Thanks so much for telling us all this.
(Text 10)
Future homes will have some really smart cooking tools. Microwave ovens and refrigerators will probably be combined, so that meals can be ready upon one’s arrival time.
Future homes may also have refrigerators that can suggest menus based upon the food you have at home. In the home of the future, the refrigerator will probably also be able to take note of all food supplies in the home and inform you when they’re running out, or even be programmed to contact the local supermarket to drop off the needed food supplies.
Future homes will also be very energy-saving. Microsoft, Google and others are now working on applications to help you see and track which tools use the most electricity, helping you save electricity and thus your daily expenses.
There will most likely also be systems in place for saving and reusing wash water and bath water, which will probably have to be the main origin of future water, so that both plants and people can still have clean water in the future, when water supplies are low.
