After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, especially with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, but others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often come to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.
Children react(反应) differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will remain silent and not communicate with people, while others will have angry outbursts(爆发). Parents should keep an eye on each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries.
Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family meal times or bed times for them. They should answer questions shortly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Problems may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. After talking about the earthquake with young children, parents might read their favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and should spend more time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.
31. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. How to prepare before an earthquake happens
B. What to do in an earthquake
C. How to face the loss of a loved one in an earthquake
D. How to help children recover mentally (精神上) from an earthquake . The underlined “contend with” in Para. 1 can be changed into “______”.
A. deal with
B. make up
C. put off
D. turn to
33. When children ask the same question again, parents should _______.
A. read a favorite story to them
B. ask them to do some housework
C. be patient and answer the question again
D. take them out to play games
34. Which of the following pieces of advice is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Keep a close watch on children’s behavior
B. Tell the children they are safe
C.Tell the children you love them
D.Ask educational experts(专家) for help. What can we know from the passage?
A. All people will recover from an earthquake quickly.
B. Children may need a longer time to recover after an earthquake.
C. Children should turn to their classmates for help after an earthquake.
D. Children react in the same way as adults do to an earthquake.
C
We all enjoy the colors of autumn leaves. The changing fall leaves never fail to surprise us. Did you ever wonder how and why a fall leaf changes color? Where do the yellows and oranges come from? To answer those questions, we first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.
Leaves are nature's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose(葡萄糖). Oxygen is a gas in the air that we need to breathe. Glucose is a kind of sugar. Plants use glucose as food for energy and as a building block for growing. The way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar is called photosynthesis(光合作用).
A chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素)helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees "know" to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live on the food they stored during summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green dies away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.
The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. In some trees, like maples, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the leaves to turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves.
36. The writer asked some questions in the beginning in order to____________.
A. persuade readers to believe something
B. offer something to think over
C. get the readers excited
D. introduce the topic of the passage
37. Which of the following is TRUE about photosynthesis?

B. Glucose provides energy and food for plants to grow.
C. Sunlight is turned into sugar as plants’ food.
D. Glucose produces chlorophyll that plants need.
38. Leaves are green in summer because_________________.
A. green chlorophyll offers a green color for leaves
B. sunlight turns water and carbon dioxide into a green color
C. there are no other colors in the leaves except green
D. glucose gives leaves their green color

A. Trees don't change colors with seasons.
B. Trees can still perform photosynthesis well in winter.
C. Trees have colors like yellow and orange even in summer.
D. Trees don't need food in winter.
40. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. We Love the Beautiful Fall Leaf Colors
B. Chlorophyll and the Fall Leaf Colors

D
In England three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop. They studied the information on the post sign and decided which bus to take. About five minutes later the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to get on. Suddenly people rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted insulting words about the foreigners. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus so that the first person who arrived at a bus-stop is the first person to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand should be used for washing yourself. Also in India, You might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and consider that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India shaking one’s head means expressing agreement. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to express “yes” — a nod means “no”.
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence (冒犯). It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adult — it’s just not done.
Attitudes to women vary a lot around the world. In Japan, for example, it is quite usual for men to plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home.
Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when you are traveling, but you also need to know the language used to express different degrees of formality (礼节).
41. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed because ________.
A. they didn’t know the English language
B. the bus conductor told them to jump the queue
C. they didn’t know the custom of lining up for a bus
D. they thought they were not respected
42. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “insulting” in Para. 1?
A. generous
B. entertaining
C. misunderstanding
D. rude
43. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?
A. In Europe, using the left hand is considered less respected.
B. In India, the left hand is not used as a sign of respect to others.
C. In Thailand, you’d better cross your legs when sitting or talking.
D. In Japan, it is considered bad manners to touch the head of an adult.

A. you are probably thirsty if you nod your head
B. you’re possibly eager to have a drink if you nod your head
C. you probably refuse to drink when you nod your head
D. you’d like to have a cup of tea because you nod your head
45. We can infer from the passage that _________.
A. in Asian countries, women are equal to men in every field

Dear Mr. Li,
I’m glad to tell you that I have improved a lot in my English study since I became a senior high student.
When I started to learn senior English in the beginning, I had much difficulty in learning English. I found it so difficult that I almost lost heart. Later, I gradually realized the importance of English. As a result, I worked hard every day, such as reading and reciting English texts as often as possible. I also went to ask my teachers and classmates for better ways of learning English. It is their help and your encouragement that help me make great progress in my English. And now I’m getting more and more interested in it.
Thank you so much for your great help in your class.
Wish you all the best.
