A father in Wuhan, nicknamed "Eagle Dad" for his controversial parenting style, has dismissed critics' claims that he pushes his 4-year-old son too hard.

Police officer Wang Shaoyan came under the spotlight this month after his child took part in an 18-kilometer race in the Hubei provincial capital.

Some parents attacked his methods of extreme physical training, while others reacted strongly to his admission that he regularly exposes the youngster to cold showers. "I just want my son to reach his full potential," Wang said, adding that 4-year-old son not only runs 3 km every day,

he also takes cold showers from time to time to strengthen his body's resistance and willpower.

"He has never taken any sick leave from kindergarten," he said proudly. However, some parents find his methods too extreme.

"I'm not sure a 4-year-old is prepared for such intense training," said Zhang Ruxia a woman who gave birth to two boys in October in Tianjin. "You can have good intentions to train your child at an early age but you also have to consider whether he can take it." Wang responded by saying children are too young to make decisions, and it is up to parents to lead them on the right path.

"I read many materials before and the whole process is step-by-step without pushing or imposing on my son," Wang said. The father said he was not acting rashly but following a scientific way of education. He said the doubts about his methods reflect the declining standards of modern education.

"Many people in Japan give their children cold showers too, and no one is fussing about it," he said. The traditional way of education applied by most of his peers might not necessarily help bring the best out of a child he said.

Wang said in addition to the physical training, he has also laid out a detailed and particular program to strengthen the intelligence of the child. "I have hired some university students to expand his knowledge in natural sciences, while playing the video for English-language teaching as well," he said.

  56. For what reason was Wang made known to the public?

  A. He employed some college students to teach his son.

  B. He made his kid take a long distance race.

  C. He exposed his 4-year-old to cold showers.

  D. He forced his youngster to run 3 km every day.

  57. Which statement is supported by the parents who hold the opposite opinion?

  A. Extreme physical training can explore children's full potentials.

  B. Taking cold showers regularly is beneficial for children's development.

  C. It's up to parents to lead children on the right path.

  D. The way to educate children should agree with their age.

  58. What does the underlined phrase "fussing about” probably mean in the 7th paragraph?

  A. Looking forward to.

  B. Paying attention to.

  C. Laughing at.

  D. Talking about.

  59. In Eagle Dad's opinion, his extreme parenting was questioned because______.

  A. he didn't take it step by step in a scientific way

  B. the highly tense work-out was misunderstood

  C. modern education is not challenging enough

  D. some parents were jealous of his success

  Why Doesn’t Anybody Copy Apple?

Apple’s products are the envy of the world. They have been spectacularly successful and are widely imitated, if not copied. The minute Apple crystallizes a product, everyone knows how to compete. This idea that the basis of competition is set by Apple and then the race is on to climb the path of improvement is unquestionable. When Apple releases a product that defines a category or dramatically changes the structure of an industry, it becomes obvious what needs to be built. But what I wonder is why everyone wants to copy Apple’s products but nobody wants to copy being Apple?

I can think of two reasons. Firstly, Apple is not worth copying because it’s not successful; secondly, Apple’s success cannot be copied because it is a magical process.

There is a great deal of evidence for the first hypothesis. The idea of Apple being successful is not something reflected in its stock price. Being valued lower than the average company in the S&P(标准普尔)500 indicates that to whatever degree Apple was successful in the past, it’s not seen by the vast majority of observers as successful in the future. Why should one bother copying Apple if it results in being punished with a low valuation? If one works really hard at innovation(革新)and then that innovation becomes commoditized(商品化)very quickly, why should one bother?

“chief-sorcerer” theory of success which places one magician, like Steve Jobs, in charge of casting all the right spells(符咒).

What about Apple’s own opinion of what makes it different? Tim Cook refers to a great team and integration(融合)of hardware, software and services as unique Apple advantages. It’s a better explanation. Integration is something that can take a long time, but it is possible with great effort. A few companies are starting to make moves in that direction, but efforts are half-hearted. There is no “move the Earth” panic to become an integrated company from Samsung, Google or Microsoft.

My own suspicion is that Apple is more aware of what makes it special than it lets out. However, as Tim points out, it’s not a formula. It’s complex, but it’s not magic. It’ s a process that requires a degree of faith and courage.

  60. When a new product of Apple comes out, often it ______.

  A. starts a revolution of an industry B. ruins an industry dramatically

  C. puts itself in an unbeatable position D. is soon overtaken by imitated products

  61. According to the passage, other companies don’t “copy being Apple” because ______.

  A. Apple is not a successful company

  B. they have no access to relevant resources

  C. it’s hard to find a magician like Steve Jobs

  D. being Apple takes more than time and efforts

  62. We can infer from Para.5 that ______.

  A. other companies are dedicated to integration

  B. Apple itself is fully aware of its unique advantages

  C. Apple will hold the leading position in this industry

  D. other companies don’t have a great team as Apple does

  63. What does the author think of Tim Cook’s statement?

  A. Doubtful.

  B. Acceptable.

  C. Unbelievable.

  D. Disappointing.

Tui Na and Your Emotional Health

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the body, mind and spirit cannot be divided and so the unique whole-body treatment in Tui Na can also be a useful treatment correcting any imbalances in the body's energy before symptoms and disease can develop. It also works to restore emotional harmony as well as physical health. This is why after a Tui Na treatment many people "feel good". Many people in China use Tui Na regularly to keep healthy and to deal with some specific illnesses.

Tui Na is performed on the clothed body and the patient is either lying on a couch or sitting on a chair. Therapists using a variety of strokes or movements will control the intensity and direction of pressure in an exact way. The unique rolling movement in Tui Na is one of the most difficult strokes to learn and students have to practice sometimes for many months on a rice bag before they are allowed to practice on the human body.

  Stress

Tui Na is of course very useful for treating stress.

It distributes the energy around the whole body. It is believed that Tui Na moves the strong energy in the tense muscles to the weaker areas, thus making a more balanced body. When your Qi(energy in the body)flow is balanced you feel relaxed and comfortable. Tui Na is especially useful for stiff shoulders and tense neck muscles.

  Emotions

In Traditional Chinese Medicine each major organ is linked to an emotion. By balancing the energy in the organ, the relevant emotion will be calmed. When your emotions are out of control, you would usually turn to your doctor or perhaps a psychotherapist. But perhaps some people would not like to be seeing a psychotherapist or feel nervous about discussing their problems with others. With Tui Na one does not need to tell the therapist anything one does not want to. The treatment of Tui Na can deal with the problem itself — although if one does need to talk, then the safe space is there to do so. An active dialogue between the therapist and the patient will help to get a better effect.

How the major organs rule your emotions

Each major organ — the heart, the stomach, the spleen, the liver, the bladder, the kidneys, the lungs, etc. — is linked to a relevant emotion.

The heart is linked to joy, excitement and sadness. If the heart is out of balance, the patient may dream a lot at night and often forget something important in the day.

The stomach and spleen are connected with too much thinking or worrying — over anxiety. When the stomach is out of balance there is often a lack of energy. The patient often feels very tired and has no interest in doing anything at all.

The liver and gall bladder are linked to anger. In Chinese Medicine the eyes are connected with the liver, and many people who suffer from anger often suffer from eye problems. The gall bladder rules decision-making and too much energy here can lead to rashness, while if there is too little it can bring about indecision. Where there is a history of depression, the therapist would look to the liver.

The bladder and kidneys are linked to fear of all kinds, from simple anxieties and phobias to vague fears and worries.

The lungs are connected with feelings of grief and sadness. When there is a history of grief, the therapist would look to the lungs.

Tui Na is used in almost all the hospitals in China and very popular among Chinese people. It is a useful and valuable method of restoring Qi balance, when emotional and physical health is out of balance. Tui Na is one of the remaining secrets of Chinese Medicine.

  64.

According to the passage, which statement is TRUE about Tui Na?

  A. Tui Na is a whole-body treatment and can't be divided into different parts.

  B. Tui Na can be used to balance the diseases before they can develop in the body.

  C. Tui Na can bring back not only physical health but also emotional health.

  D. Tui Na only makes people "feel good" but do not actually cure disease.

  D

One of the widely recognized aspects of China’s modernization process in recent years has been the fast development of the highway system. Twenty years ago, there was virtually no highway in China. Now China has 65,000 kilometers of highway and will exceed(超越that of the US in two or three years.

But I have a love-hate relationship with China’s highway system after taking to the road many times. To drivers, China’s highway system is probably the world’s most expensive with “here toll, there toll, everywhere toll.”

For example, transporting a large container from Guangdong Province to the Beijing-Tianjin area involves paying toll fees of somewhere between 4,000 to 6,000 yuan ($600-900), depending on its weight. This actually makes transporting the same container from Chicago to Beijing-Tianjin area via sea shipment even cheaper. When moving things around the country is more expensive than moving things halfway around the globe, you know there got to be something wrong.

One doesn’t have to drive on highways for long to notice that the system is obviously inefficient. Many highways in China don’t see much traffic during the day.

While Chinese can feel proud that our country is the king of the highways, it is quite another feeling to consider that the steel, concrete and labor that go into highway construction will have to be eventually paid by the vehicles that go through, and there just aren’t enough of them. That means a high toll rate is inevitable.

Now I understand highways are expensive to build and the investment has to be recouped(收回via toll collection. OK, you pay for what you get. But how much of the collected toll income goes toward paying back highway construction loans is very much in doubt. Has the whole thing become a scheme for meaningless job creation?

In China, collecting toll fees is a very well-paid job, and in some cases pays better than a full professorship. I assume receiving cash and handing out a ticket doesn’t need much education, right? It certainly can’t be more stressful than migrant workers pouring concrete on the road under the sun.

And then there are those obvious wastes at the toll booths(收费亭. China now has the world’s most beautiful and most expensive toll booths. Every time I drive by a toll booth and see a nice office building nearby for the so-called management staff, I can’t help thinking of the AC/DC song “Highway to Hell!”

According to traffic law, when the line of waiting traffic is over 200 meters long and when all lanes at the toll booth are not fully open, drivers have the right to pass free. However, I have certainly run into traffic jams caused by toll booth delays many times, and I have never enjoyed such a free ride.

  67. What does the underlined word “inevitable” in the 5th paragraph most probably mean?

  A. Achievable

  B. Acceptable

  C. Unreasonable

  D. Unavoidable

  68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?

  A. China will have the longest highway in the world in two or three years.

  B. Moving things within China will cost more than moving things around the globe.

  C. Much of the toll income does not go toward paying back highway construction.

  D. When the line of waiting traffic is over 200 meters long, he has the right to pass free.

  69. What does the writer mainly want to express in this article?

  A. China has built too much more highways than actually are needed.

  B. Highway construction loans should not be recouped through toll collection.

  C. There is something wrong with the toll system in China’s highway.

  D. Too much money is wasted in collecting toll fees.

  70. The author writes this passage in order to ________.

  A. encourage others

  B. criticize something

  C. ask for help

  D. solve problems

What are the children in post-90s era like?

By carefully studying and analyzing the interactive relations between the growth of youth and the change of social environment in China, Professor Yang Xiong, a research fellow from Institute of Children's Studies, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences summarized several similarities shared by the children in post 90s era.

  I. They have an avant-garde(前卫的concept of consumption and strong desires and lay excessive(过度的emphasis on the importance and the amount of money and the way how to get money. A survey on under-10 children in Shanghai and Paris over their ideal career in the future showed that children in France preferred the profession of sportsman, rock & roll singer and sailing boat athlete; whereas children in China wanted to be boss, entrepreneur and leader, and desired vehicle and villa. They have been influenced by their parents, schools and the society they lived in to some extent.

II. They are in great need of a sense of loyalty to teams. Some social phenomena have weakened their interests toward loyalty, and they advocate individualism. Actually, some parents would subconsciously(潜意识地encourage their children to do something selfish rather than contribute to the team.

III. They are closer to the new media than their parents are and they are prone to(易于fall the victims during the process of globalization. They have broader visions and possess pluralistic(多元的 ways in accepting information. Meanwhile, they are better developed in terms of psychology and intelligence, with wide range of knowledge and a precocious(早熟的inner world. But it seems that such qualities are more likely to make them feel hollow.

IV. Some social realities have made them understand that they should pay more attention to concrete things rather than abstract philosophy. And some of them concern more about their comfortable lives and the way of making living.

Prof. Yang held that the weakness of the children in post 90s era required early attention. Adults, parents should set an example for the children and take the responsibility. Along with the social development, children of post 90s era will become a generation of all-round development.

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic?

With the development of economy, more and more vehicles are going on the streets. As a result, most cities, especially the big ones, suffer from traffic congestion. Heavy traffic has become one of the major concerns of the society.

To solve the problem, people have put forward many solutions, of which the following two are typical. One is to lay down more roads. It will make the highways less crowded and quicken the flow of traffic. Another is to open up more bus routes. In this case, more people will take buses rather ride bikes or drive cars. Then the number of cars and bikes racing on the streets will decline.

However, either of the two solutions brings about problems at the same time. The former may occupy too much land, which can be otherwise more effectively used. For the latter, it will cause inconvenience to those who are living far away from the bus stops. The best solution, in my eyes, is to combine the two: building more roads where land is less profitable and opening up more bus routes in downtown areas.
