  第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

  A

A cat whisperer is a person who respects and understand cats. Talking to a cat means understanding spoken and unspoken words of a cat. Cat whisperer can help treat a cat well.

You too can become a cat whisperer if you learn to understand the body language of your cat. Take its eyes for example. If a cat opens her eyes wide and looks right at you, she is attentive and ready to listen to you. When the eyes are half closed, it may mean she is a sleepy cat or she may want you to know, “I trust you and everything around me. I’m safe.”

When the cat’s eyes are clouded, it means that she is ill or may even be in a reduced mood. When the cat stares at you, she means that she wants you to stay away and does not wish to be disturbed.

Besides the body language, you also need to consider a cat’s feelings if you want to become a cat whisperer. For example, if you are petting your cat and you see her tail moving from side to side, it means that she is happy and loves to be petted. But if suddenly you get a bite, it means that she wants you to stop petting at once. A cat kneading (揉,捏) on your legs means that she loves and appreciates you.

Cats are not good at showing their emotions like the dogs, but prove to be good friends just the same. With a bit understanding and patience, you too will become a good cat whisperer.

  56. The text is mainly about __________.

  A. the body language of cats

  B. how to become a good cat whisperer

  C. the job of a cat whisperer

  D. how to deal with cats

  57. When your cat’s wants to stay alone, it will __________.

  A. stare at you

  B. leave it eyes half closed

  C. keep its eyes clouded

  D. look right at you with its eyes wide open

  58. In the last paragraph, the author tries to __________.

  A. tell readers to be friendly to cats.

  B. tell people to understand cats and be patient

  C. encourage people to become a cat whisperer

  D. tell readers to protect cats that man’s good friends.

  B

Mark Twain was a great writer. He was from the USA. He was born in 1835. He was also a famous speaker. He was famous for his sense of humour. Many people liked to listen to him talk because he liked to tell some interesting stories to make people laugh all the time.

One day Mark Twain was going to a small town because of his writing. Before he was going to leave, one of his friends said to him that there were always a lot of mosquitoes(蚊子) in the town and told him that he’d better not go there. Mark Twain waved (摇动) his hand and said, “It doesn’t matter. The mosquitoes are no relatives of mine. I don’t think they will come to visit me.”

After he arrived at the town, Mark Twain stayed in a small hotel near the station. He went into his room, but when he was just about to have a rest, quite a few mosquitoes flew about him. The waiters felt very sorry about that. “I’m very sorry, Mr. Mark Twain. There are too many mosquitoes in our town.” One of them said to him.

Mark Twain, however, made a joke, saying to the waiter, “The mosquitoes are very clever. They know my room number. They didn’t come into the wrong room.” What he said made all the people present laugh heartily.

When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer (使…快活) me up, my laugh turned into crying.

So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so does crying.

Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional (情感的) health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.

Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and more friendly and they are more ready to offer support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we're very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.

Just as crying can be healthy, not crying — holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering — can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural — and healthy — emotional response.

  63. Why didn't the author cry when her grandmother died?

  A. The author doesn’t give the explanation.

  B. Because she did not love her grandmother.

  C. Because she was too shy to cry at that time.

  D. Because her father did not want her to feel too sad.

  64. It can be inferred (推断) from the text that ______.

  A. there are two ways to keep healthy

  B. laughing does more good to health than crying

  C. emotional health has a close relationship to physical health

  D. crying and laughing play the same roles

  65. According to the author, which of the following statements is true?

  A. Crying is the best way to get help from others.

  B. Holding back tears may cause some health problems.

  C. We will know our deep feelings if we cry.

  D. We must cry if we want to reduce pressure.

  66. What might be the best title for the text?

  A. Power of Tears

  B. How to Keep Healthy

  C. Why We Cry

  D. A New Scientific Discovery

  67. What might the underlined word “fight” in the last paragraph mean?

  A. come back

  B. pay back

  C. hold back

  D. give back

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the

air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February. Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming. The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away." 72. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements except that  __________.

  A. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through February

  B. they should be easy to make friends with

  C. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold months D. they must reach the age of 60

  73. According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that __________. A. you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blue B. cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winter C. cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high D. Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water 74. The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for __________. A. they can remain young       B. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winter C. they find it enjoyable and interesting  D. they might meet fewer troubles in life 75. The passage is mainly about __________.

  A. the polar bears' life

  B. a group of cold-water swimming lovers    C. doctors' ideas about cold-water swimming    D. the requirements of the Polar Bear Club

I am very glad to hear that you are coming to our school to learn Chinese for a year. Here I will introduce our school first.

Our school was founded in 1984 and consists of more than 30 classes. Over 100 teachers are working here. It is located at the center of the city and there is extremely convenient transportation. I believe you will enjoy your life here.

However, you will face difficulties if you study in our school. Firstly, you may have difficulty in your study because we speak Chinese all day long. Secondly, you will suffer from homesickness because of living far away from your country.

I think you’d better read some books in Chinese to overcome the trouble in understanding the language before you come here.
