I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film.We set off early for a distant water hole.A huge elephant covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn't going to hurry now. He'd drink a while and rest in the shade, and then drink again or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down.Within minutes he was dead.

We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant's body, and let out over 100 liters of pus (胺)—the result of the elephant's meeting with a poacher(偷猎者)months before.

Today's poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies.Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at onceit doesn't mean the poison won't finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death.

Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time. When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground.I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit—but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed to be a poorer and emptier place.

21.While filming near the water hole, the author and his team ________.

  A.knew the elephant was injured

  B.found the elephant acted violently

C.tried their best to save the elephant

D.thought the elephant was in good condition

由第一段第四、五、六句话“He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn't going to hurry now. He'd drink a while and rest in the shade, and then drink again or so we thought.”

22.Further examination showed that the dead elephant ________.

A.had suffered an hour or two

B.was killed by a poisonous needle

  C.had suffered a lot

D.had had a good fight with a poacher

23.How does the author feel when thinking about the elephant's death?

  A.Empty.B.Comfortable.

  C.Upset. D.Relieved.

由最后一段最后一句话“...but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed to be a poorer and emptier place.”

24.Why did the author write the text?

  A.To introduce African elephant.

B.To show the cruelty of poaching.

  C.To describe his filming experience.

D.To ask readers to protect wild animals.

There's a “culture of walking and texting” on the Utah Valley University campus, according to conversations with students, but that's not the main reason Matt Bambrough, the creative director at UVU, came up with an idea to paint a “texting lane” on a staircase leading up to the Wellness Center.

According to Bambrough, it's first and foremost a design project—the texting lane was a tongueincheek(戏谑)reference to the collegewide epidemic(流行)of kids walking around with their faces buried in their iPhones.

“You have 1824yearolds walking down the hall with smart phones. You're almost bound to run into someone somewhere; it's something we're dealing with in this day and age,” Bambrough said.“But preventing collisions isn't the reason we did it—we did it to arouse the students' attention. It's meant to be there for people to look at and enjoy.”

Still, when talking to Utah Valley students, it sounds like texting and walking can be quite the annoyance.

Robbie Poffenberger, an assistant news editor at the UVU Review, said that most collisions he witnesses aren't humanonhuman; rather, it's generally humanoninanimateobject.“They walk into barriers—chairs on the side of the hallway, or railings,” Poffenberger said, “I'm sure they're fairly embarrassed.”

  26.According to Bambrough, ________.

A.the “texting lane” is to attract students' attention

B.we don't have to face the problem in this age

C.what they did is to prevent the collisions

D.students enjoy looking at each other

从文章第三段的“we did it to arouse the students' attention”可知,答案为A。

27.How do students feel about texting and walking?

  A.They are worried.

  B.They are annoyed.

C.They are puzzled. D.They are surprised.

根据文章第四段“it sounds like texting and walking can be quite the annoyance.”

28.What would most students run into from what Robbie said?

  A.Students in the same direction.

  B.Teachers opposite to them.

  C.Barriers on campus.

  D.Grass on campus.

从文章中最后一段的“most collisions he witnesses aren't humanonhuman; rather, it's generally humanoninanimateobject.”和“They walk into barriers”可知,答案为C。

  Running on Empty

For almost a century, scientists have assumed, tiredness—or exhaustion—in athletes originates in the muscles(肌肉).Precise explanations have varied, but all have been based on the “Limitations Theory”.In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit: they either run out of

fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful byproducts(副产品).

In the past few years, however, Timothy Noakes from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, has examined this standard theory.Tiredness, he argues, is caused not by signals springing from overtaxed muscles, but is an emotional response which begins in the brain. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of exhaustion. When the brain decides it's time to quit, it creates unbearable muscle tiredness. This “Central Governor” theory remains controversial, but it does explain many puzzling aspects of athletic performance.

A recent discovery that Noakes calls the “lactic acid paradox” made him start researching this area seriously.Lactic acid is a byproduct of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. But when research subjects exercise

in certain conditions created artificially, they become tired even though lactic acid levels remain low.Nor has the oxygen content of their blood fallen too low for them to keep going.Obviously, something else was making them tire before they hit either of these physiological limits.

Noakes conducted an experiment with seven cyclists. It has long been known that during exercise, the body never uses 100% of the available muscle fibers(纤维).The amount used varies, but in some tasks such as this cycling test the body calls on about 30%.His team found that as tiredness set in, the electrical activity in cyclist's legs declined—even when they were making a great effort to cycle as fast as they could.

To Noakes, this was strong evidence that the old theory was wrong.“The cyclists may have felt completely exhausted,” he says, “but their bodies actually had considerable reserves that they could theoretically tap by using a greater amount of the resting fibers.” This, he believes, is the proof that the brain is regulating the pace of the workout to hold the cyclists well back from the point of extreme tiredness.

32.Which of the following is supported by the “Limitations Theory”?

A.Tiredness is caused by signals from brain.

B.The body uses 100% of the muscle fibers in exercise.

C.Athletes feel tired when they use up all their energy.

D.Athletes become tired though lactic acid levels remain low.

由第一段最后一句话“In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit: they either run out of

fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful byproducts(副产品).”可知。

33.Noakes has found out that ________.

  A.muscle fibers control athletes' movements

B.mental processes control the symptoms of tiredness

C.lactic acid levels remain high in cycling test

D.different exercises use different amount of muscle fibers

由第二段第三句话“The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of exhaustion.”可知。

34.It is likely that both theories accept that ________.

A.the energy in human bodies can be balanced

B.the oxygen content in blood may rise after sports

C.tiredness is a harmful byproduct of exercise

D.lactic acid is produced in muscles during exercise

由第三段第二句话“Lactic acid is a byproduct of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness.”可知。

35.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The description of a new test.

  B.The explanation of the theory.

C.The whole process of the research.

D.The puzzling evidence of a study.

  The iPod generation

Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go.They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what's happening around them.__36__ Outside life is shut out.So are you one of “them”?

For me, walking around in my own personal bubble is perfect. __37__ What's even better, wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says: “I'm not available for chatting at the moment!”

Suppose you're at work and about to make an incredible breakthrough, but a colleague suddenly turns up.At this precise moment, the slightest disturbance would break your concentration. __38__ Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that “Go away!” signal.

__39__ It's probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can just turn up the volume(声音) on their MP3 player, smile, and say “Yes, Mum.” Problem solved.

Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears—but also our brains will be directly plugged into some new hightech instrument. We'll be in a virtual(虚拟) world, communicating with everyone else, or choosing not to, as we like.In this world, we will all be permanently plugged in. __40__ And they are changing our social habits along the way.

In the end, there is a thin line between using technology as a tool for making life better and being a slave to it! It's so strange—suddenly, I don't feel like wearing my earphones any more!

A.Listening to music through earphones is the perfect way to ignore such interruptions.

B.I also have wires hanging from my ears.

C.They walk around in their own spaces, with their personal “digital noise reduction systems.”

D.I don't have to deal with the noise from the environment.

E.After all, I am listening to my favorite music and would rather not be disturbed.

  F.Our instruments are changing quickly.

G.In the home situation, teenagers love these wires.

36.C 根据前句“They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what's happening around them.”

  38.A 与前面列举的情形相联系,只有A项such interruptions与之照应。

  39.G 空后的the growing up stage与G项teenagers照应。

40.F 空前的but also our brains will be directly plugged into some new hightech instrument. We'll be in a virtual(虚拟) world讲的是变化,所以F项正确。

Li Hua is a senior three student who

himself to his lessons every day.Last Saturday, as usual, he went to several courses. In the evening, he

at home until deep into the night. He was

sleepy and tired that he couldn't work effectively. Sunday morning, Li Hua was about to study when his father came up and advised him to have a break.Soon they had good idea. They bought a kite which they liked it very much and then the family went to the suburbs where Li Hua enjoyed himself

the kite. The family had a picnic together

felt very relaxed in the open air.On Monday, Li Hua was energetic and

in class. He said it was only

  he had a better weekend.

考查搭配so...that 如此……
