  60.

In America, Virginia Beach has all the elements of a classic seaside resort: brilliant beaches, a lively boardwalk, plenty of restaurants and nightspots, and amusement rides sure to appeal to kids. Many believe Virginia Beach is at its best in the offseason, when the town is less crowded but the weather is still mild.

Meanwhile, some safety tips should be followed, enjoying the happiness and excitement the beach offers.

The number 1 safety tip concerns ocean safety: pay attention to Flag conditions posted on the lifeguard stands.Lifeguards post a red flag to warn when the ocean water is dangerous.Take them seriously! Tourists from landlocked regions are particularly easily attracted by the magic of the waves. However, a calm ocean can become risky without warning.Make sure you swim near a lifeguard.Swimming without lifeguard protection is almost five times as great as drowning at a beach with lifeguards.

Never swim alone. Many drownings involve single swimmers. When you swim with someone else, if one of you has a problem, the other may be able to get help, including signaling for assistance from others.

Don't fight the current. The facts show that some 80% of rescues by lifeguards at ocean beaches are caused by currents. These currents are formed by surf and gravity, because once surf pushes water up the slope of a beach, gravity pulls it back. This can create concentrated rivers of water moving offshore. If you are caught in a rip current, don't fight it by trying to swim directly to shore.Instead, swim parallel to shore until you feel the current relax, then swim to shore. Most rip currents are narrow and a short swim parallel to shore will help bring you to safety.

16.When coming to Virginia Beach, children CANNOT enjoy the happiness of________.

A.walking on the road made of wood

  B. joining the nightspots

  C.riding a horse or a pumper car

  D.surfing in the sea

17.Many people believe the best time to visit Virginia Beach may be ________.

  A.after autumn school term beginning

  B.in the summer vacation

  C.during the Christmas holiday

  D.in the cold winter

18.Swimming in the sea you'd better not swim ________.

  A.with a friend

B.within the sight of the lifeguard

  C.with the current

  D.as far as you like

19.From the passage, we can know________.

A.one in five persons swimming in the sea is drowned

B.if one with a lifeguard were drowning, five persons without lifeguards would be

C.some 80% people drowning by the currents are rescued by lifeguards

D.some 20% people drowning by the currents are rescued by lifeguards

20.The passage mainly tells us ________.

A.Virginia Beach has all the elements of a classic seaside resort

B.the happiness and excitement the beach offers

C.some safety tips when swimming in the sea

D.the dangers for tourists from landlocked regions to swim in the sea

根据第一段“Many believe Virginia Beach is at its best in the offseason, when the town is less crowded but the weather is still mild.”

根据第三段“Make sure you swim near a lifeguard.”

根据第三段“Swimming without lifeguard protection is almost five times as great as drowning at a beach with lifeguards.”

全文围绕第二段“Meanwhile, some safety tips should be followed, enjoying the happiness and excitement the beach offers.” The booking notes of the play “the Age of Innocence”:

38.D 细节理解题。由文章中的“School: school parties of ten or more can book $6 standby tickets in advance and will get every tenth ticket free. ”可以看出,10人及以上团体票单价6美元,每10张还可以优惠一张。由此可知D项错误。

Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

  King's Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.

You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint — free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.

  The Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multibranched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above bluegreen leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlifeenthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.

  Byron's Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the

  time

pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you'll take it from Virginia Woolf—over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.

  61. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for ________.

  A.attending the masters' class

  B.working with local artists

  C.learning life drawing

  D.seeing an exhibition

  62. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are ________.

  A.common insects

  B.impressive plants

  C.rarelyseen snakes

  D.wildlifeenthusiasts

  63. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed ________.

  A.to fear pet bears

  B.to like walking

  C.to be a heavy drinker

  D.to finish university in 1805

  64. In the passage Byron's Pool is described as a lake________.

  A.surrounded by fields

  B.owned by Lord Byron

  Finally, a cell phone

  That's…a phone

With rates as low as $3.75 per week!

“Well, I finally did it. I finally decided to enter the digital age and get a cell phone. My kids have been annoying me and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck by the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones all have cameras, computers and a “globalpositioning”something or other that's supposed to spot me from space. Goodness, all I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! The people at the store weren't much help. They couldn't understand why someone wouldn't want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were confusing, and expensive…and the contract(合同)lasted for two years! I'd almost given up until a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being about to stay in touch…with a phone I can actually use.”

Affordable plans that I can understand—and no contract to sign(签订)! Unlike other cell phones, Jitterbug has plans that make sense. Why should I pay for minutes I'm never going to use? And if I do talk more than I plan, I won't find myself with no minutes like my friend who has a prepaid phone. Best of all, there is no contract to sign—so I'm not locked in for years at a time. The USbased customer service is second to none. And the phone gets service anywhere in the country.

The Basics of Math—Made Clear

Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra(代数)and beyond.

The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic. They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics,

and how these operations can be used practically.

Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure understanding of the material by students. The lectures offer students the chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening. They also help students prepare for college mathematics and overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field of study.

By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery(神秘性) of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges.

Professor H. Siegel, honored by Kentucky Educational Television as “the best math teacher in America”, is a devoted teacher and has a gift for explaining mathematical concepts in ways that make them seem clear and obvious. From the basic concrete ideas to the more abstract problems, he is a master in making math lectures learnerfriendlier and less scary.

With a PhD in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University, Dr. Siegel teaches mathematics at Central Arizona College. His courses include various makeup classes and a number of lectures for future primary school teachers.

If the course fails to provide complete satisfaction to you, you can easily exchange it for any other course that we offer. Or you can get your money back.

56.What does the course Basic Math mainly cover?

  A.Algebra.

  B.College Mathematics.

  C.Arithmetic.

  D.Mathematics Education.

57.What benefits can students expect from Basic Math?

  A.Stronger imaginative ability.

  B.Additional presentation skills.

  C.More mathematical confidence.

  D.Greater chances of becoming teachers.

58.What can we learn about Professor H.Siegel?

A.He is a guest lecturer at Kentucky Educational Television.

B.He is to deliver 30 lectures in Basic Math.

C.He works in Georgia State University.

  D.He specializes in training teachers.

59.Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from?

  A.A news report.

  B.A book review.

  C.A lesson plan.

  D.An advertisement.

根据第二段第一句“The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic.”

根据最后一段 “If the course fails to provide complete satisfaction to you, you can easily exchange it for any other course that we offer. Or you can get your money back.”

Top lists are lecturing people on everything from “100 places to visit” to “100 books to read”. Aren't you just tired of being told what to do with your time?

Now you have a list to end all lists!

Take a look at the following two examples from the list of “101 things not to do”:

  Swim with Dolphins(海豚)?

Swimming with dolphins is one of the world's most profitable tourist activities. However, not every dolphin will welcome having their busy, tiring day interrupted by tourists screaming and pushing around them in the water. Worse yet,

when dolphins get too near to the boats loaded with tourists, they could get caught up in ropes and killed by propellers(螺旋桨).

Here's a little secret. Dolphins look like smiling at you, but actually they're just opening their mouths.

Go to See the Mona Lisa?

There must be something about the mysterious(神秘的) smile. The 6 million people who visit the lady in the Louvre every year can't all be wrong, after all. But they can be quite annoying, standing in front of you; holding up their cameras to prevent you from seeing anything. In fact, it is hard for you to see the painting clearly because you have to stay away from it for security reasons. After queuing for hours, many tourists can remain in front of the painting only for 15 seconds at most.

If the mysterious lady in the picture knew her fate, she wouldn't just be smiling, she'd be laughing.

So, still long to see the Mona Lisa? If you want to find out more about the list, read 101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die. Visit www.not2dobeforeidie.co.uk and buy the book at a 20% discount.

  60. According to the passage, swimming with dolphins ________.

  A. is the world's most popular tourist activity

  B. gives fun to both tourists and dolphins

  C. will make tourists busy and tired

  D. can cause danger to dolphins

  61. What does the author think about going to see Mona Lisa?

  A. It is wrong to go and see the mysterious smile.

  B. It is not as satisfying as expected.

  C. Fifteen seconds in front of the painting is enough.

  D. Queuing for hours is worthwhile.

  62. The list of “101 things not to do” is made most probably because its author ________.

  A. thinks it boring to do the things suggested by other lists

  B. believes other lists are not humorous enough

  C. intends to persuade people to read more lists

D.wants to provide a list different from other lists

  63. What is the main purpose of the passage?

  A. To advertise a book.

  B. To introduce a website.

  C. To comment on popular

  lists.

  D. To recommend tourist activities.

101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die,很明显是一则常见的广告。

Go to See the Mona Lisa的材料中,作者反复论证了go to see the Mona Lisa的诸多弊端,每年大量的游客前往参观,个人不可能有预想的观赏效果。

101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die打广告。
