社会文化(阅读理解)由 (2017重庆,C)There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a little bit of whisky (威士忌)at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle. When Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1873 she wrote in her diary,“I never saw a lovelier spot.” And she didn’t even go fishing.

Scotland is not easily defined. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange light, the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold.As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy Castle, any frustration (烦恼) will float away as gently as the circling water. It’s just you and purple, pink, white flowers, seeking a perfect harmony. If you are a new comer to fishing, learning the basics from a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime’s fun.For many, fishing is more than a sport;it is an art.

Scotland offers interesting places where you can rest after a long day’s fishing.Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland, the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland’s mountains.Ben Nevis is the highest of all British mountains, and reaching its 1343-metre top is a challenge. But it’s not just what goes up that matters; what comes down is unique.More than 900 metres high,on the mountain’s north face, lies an all-important source of pure water. Its name comes from the Gaelic language “usquebaugh”or “water of life”;and it is the single most important ingredient (原料) in Scotland’s best known drink:whisky.

1.The story of Queen Victoria is to show that .

A.the Queen is rich in tour experience

B.the Castle is a good place to go in Scotland

C.tasting whisky is better than going fishing

D.1873 is a special year for the Queen

2.How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?()

A.By giving descriptions. B.By following time order.

C.By analyzing causes. D.By making comparisons.

3.What is Ben Nevis special for?()

  A.The Inverlochy Castle Hotel.

  B.The beauty of its surroundings.

  C.The water from the mountain.

D.The challenge up to its top.

4.What is the main purpose of the passage?()

A.To introduce Scottish traditions to tourists.

B.To show the attractions of Scotland to readers.

C.To explore geographical characteristics of Scotland.

D.To describe the pleasures of life in Scotland.

作者在第一段用女王的评价“I never saw a lovelier spot.”

根据文章最后一段中的“what comes down is unique”可知,从山上流下的东西(当然是后文中说到的)pure water是独特的,因为“...it is the single most important ingredient (原料) in Scotland’s best known drink:whisky.”

A little girl in my family got a typewriter for Christmas. Not a laptop. Nothing with a screen. The old-fashioned manual kind.

Typewriters had pretty much gone the way of dodo birds quite some years before my granddaughter was born. But it was the typewriter used by a journalist in the movie “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” that attracted her.

Or maybe it was the way the typewriter was used. In the movie, Kit does old-fashioned journalism and writes stories that help right a wrong. In a challenging environment she keeps her wits — and a strong sense of ethics (道德) — about her.

However, another reporter, Chuck Tatum in “Ace in the Hole” is totally different. He tells an editor, “If there’s no news, I’ll go out and bite a dog.” Later, referring to a sign in the newsroom that reads “Tell the Truth,” Tatum acknowledges some guilt. But, “Not enough to stop me on my way to the top.”

In both movies, the journalists use typewriters. It’s what they do with them that makes the difference. And today, it’s what we do with our hardware — the journalism we produce — that makes the difference.

Typewriters have long since given way to laptops, camera phones and video phones. But here at Thomson Reuters (路透社), and in the media as a whole, the need for a strong sense of ethics has never been more necessary.

To me, at the heart of ethics are the preservation (保持) of honesty, independence and freedom from prejudice. It means ethics and standards are compatible with innovation (革新). In fact, they have to go hand in hand. There’s a lot of room for innovation here, but there’s no room for a Chuck Tatum, who would do anything to get to the top.

In about 2020, my granddaughter will probably be using technology that hasn’t been developed yet to work on her school “newspaper”. She won’t be using her typewriter but she will, I hope, be using what she’s learned from the journalists of this generation. It’s up to us to set the right example.

  41. What does Chuck Tatum mean by saying “bite a dog”?

  A. He tries all sorts of tricks to achieve his goal.

  B. He acknowledges his guilt of telling lies.

  C. He attracts people’s attention in the street.

前面通过比较Kit Kittredge和Chuck Tatum,可以看出一个真正的记者需要有强烈的道德观,结合倒数第二段“at the heart of ethics are the preservation (保持) of honesty, independence and freedom from prejudice.43. The passage may imply that __________.

  A. Dodo birds are still living on the earth.

  B. Thomson Reuters will not employ a journalist like Chuck Tatum

  C. Typewriters are more popular to the journalists than laptops

  D. what matters is that journalists should use their new-fashioned hardware

由“But here at Thomson Reuters (路透社), and in the media as a whole, the need for a strong sense of ethics has never been more necessary.Chuck Tatum不择手段获取目标的描述,可知路透社不会雇佣像Chuck Tatum一样的记者。故本题选B。

  44. The purpose of the passage is __________.

  A. to advocate the sense of ethics in journalism

  B. to criticize the lack of ethics among journalists

  C. to ask adults to set a good example for the young

  D. to encourage more people to work on newspapers

  【答案】A

由“It means ethics and standards are compatible with innovation (革新).I hope, be using what she’s learned from the journalists of this generation.” 故选A。

  45. Who are the intended readers of the passage?

  A. People in general.

  B. Fans of American films.

  C. Children like his granddaughter. D. The journalists of this generation.

Once there was a man who lied to eat mangoes. One day he decided to get the sweetest mango from the very top of the tree. Mangoes which are exposed to the sun the most are the sweetest.

So he climbed up to the top, where the branches were thin. He managed to pick up a few sweet reddish fruits, but, in an attempt to climb down, he slipped and started falling towards the ground. Fortunately, he caught the branch as he was falling and remained helplessly hanging on the tree. Then he started to call nearby villagers for help. They immediately came with a ladder and sticks, but could do little to help him.

Then after some time one calm and thoughtful person arrived - a well-known sage who lived in a simple hut nearby. People were very curious to see what he would do, as he was famous in solving many people’s problems in the area and sometimes very complicated ones.

He was silent for a minute and then picked up a stone and threw it at the hanging man.

Everybody was surprised. The hanging mango lover started to shout: What are you doing?! Are you crazy? Do you want me to break my neck?”

The sage was silent. Then he took another stone and threw it at the man. The man was very angry: “If I could just come down, I would show you!”

That’s what everybody wanted - that he came down. But how? Now everybody was tense, as to what would happen next! Some wanted to chastise the sage, but they didn’t. The sage picked another stone and threw it again at the man, even more forcefully. Now the man on the tree was enraged and developed a great determination to come down and take revenge.(复仇)

He then used all his skill and strength and somehow reached the branches which were safe to start going down. And he made it! Everybody was amazed.
