  Zhou Qifeng, one of China’s top chemists, was born in Hunan Province in 1947. Zhou’s mother brought him and his three brothers up by herself, for his father died young.   Roger Tsien

  Roger Tsien, whose uncle is Qian Xuesen, the founder of China’s space science, was born in New York, the United States in 1952 and grew up in Livingston, New Jersey. Tsien often had to stay at home because of asthma when he was a child. Showing a strong interest in chemical experiments, Tsien would spend a few hours doing chemical experiments in the basement of his home. In 1968 Tsien won the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, the first important award in his life. After that Tsien entered Harvard University, where at 20 he got a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics and graduated. Leaving Harvard University, Tsien went to Cambridge University for further education, where he got a doctor’s degree in physiology in 1977.

  In 1981Tsien came to Berkeley School of California University, where he worked as a professor for eight years. In 1989 Tsien moved his lab to San Diego School of California University, where he is a pharmacology professor and a professor of chemistry and biochemistry as well. In 1995 Tsien was made an academician of the U.S. Medical Institute and in 1998 an academician of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

  Tsien won lots of important awards from 1991 to 2004, including the 2004 Wolf Prize in Medicine, one of the world’s highest achievement awards. Tsien and two other scientists won the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovering green fluorescent protein, commonly called GFP, and developing the protein as a powerful tool for basic biological research. Tsien developed GFP-like proteins that produced all kinds of colors so that a number of different proteins or cells

  can be followed at the same time.

  , so that she became sad and left the shooting hall with tears in her eyes. But Du didn’t lose heart. On August 14, 2008 Du won the gold medal in the women’s 50m rifle three positions final with her total score, 690.3 points or 1.9 higher than the previous one held by Lioubov Galkinna and set a new Olympic record. After the final, Du cried with joy. Du said,"The five days seemed to me longer than four years. But many people offered me their support and encouragement , which made me realize that I couldn’t give up and that I have no reason to give up." Du added , “I was nervous in the first shot. But after that, I kept telling myself that I can’t make the same mistake twice. I must go on".

  There is also a long way for Du to go. We hope that Du will fly higher and higher in the blue sky of her shooting career.

  Zhai Zhigang was born in a poor farmer’s family in Heilongjiang Province in October 1966. Zhai’s father was ill in bed all the year round. As a result, the whole family lived on Zhai’s mother’s small business to sell sunflower seeds in the street. Seeing that his mother was always so tired , Zhai said with tears in his eyes: “Mum, I’d like to help you support the family instead of continuing school.” Hearing this, the kind-hearted mother said angrily: “ However hard our life is, I won’t let you leave school.” Deeply moved by his mother’s words, Zhai studied hard to make great contributions to his motherland in the future. In 1996 Zhai began to be trained for China’s space programme. Zhai recalled :" At first I wasn’t used to the situation. There were a lot of subjects for me to study, so I had to work until midnight for the first two years.” Zhai were selected an candidate (候选人) for ShenzhouV Spacecraft in 2003 and ShenzhouVI Spcacecraft in 2005, but he was dropped out. Zhai never looked disappointed. Instead each time Zhai would work much harder than before.Where there is a will, there is a way. In September 25, 2008 Shenzhou VII Spacecraft carrying Zhai and two other astronauts was sent up into spcae. Zhai and his teammates went round the earth for 68 hours, during which time Zhai walked in space twenty minutes. The successful spacewalk made Zhai China’s first spacewalker and China the third country to carry out extra-vehicular activity in space.
