It’s easy to see how to help others, but what about those whose needs aren’t so obvious? This story may have happened a while back, but it was a lesson which has stayed with me and helped me ever since.

It was Thanksgiving Day and I was volunteering with my parents at a shelter for the poor. We stood behind the counter dishing out hot food to whoever came in. Most of our dinners looked like they had been having hard times, their clothes old, worn and dry. In short, they looked poor!

Then, a man came in, who looked anything but poor. He was well dressed, wearing an expensive suit. I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station, the more I muttered. What was this man doing? I wanted to know. Surely he wasn’t going to take food.

Then my mother quietly took me to one side. She said, “You have assumed that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical: hunger, inadequate(不充足的)shelter and needs are emotional? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings? ”Her words hit me like a ton of bricks! I felt like I should apologize to the man, but I didn’t.

About a week later the shelter received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can’t help but wonder if it came from that man.

Now, whenever I meet others, I remember my mother’s words and try to send kindness and blessings to them, regardless of how they look.

Needs aren’t always visible. But kindness always makes a difference. (291W)

  10 ____________________________ _________

  14 ____________________________ _________

  15 ____________________________ _________

in real face-to-face communication nowadays, we communicate by telephone, cellphone and through the Internet more and more, instead.

  A. Lacked

  B. To lack

  C. Lacking

  D. Being lacking

【解析】选D。固定表达be lacking in在……方面缺乏, 此处的lacking为形容词, 现在分词短语作原因状语, 相当于because we are lacking in. . . 。

be worthy of值得, 符合句意。be short of缺少; be fond of喜欢; be proud of以……

—Have you looked through the plan?

—Not yet. This plan is careful consideration.

  A. worth

  B. worthy

  C. worthwhile

  D. valuable

【解析】选A。 be worth sth. 表示“值得……”, 相当于be worthy of sth. 。

have no alternative but to do sth.

  7. 【解析】选A。 break down垮掉, 崩溃; break up分解; break out爆发; break in插嘴。

B。I’d get it for you if only I could remember who last borrowed it.

as在此题中作dream of的宾语。 以至于”的such /so. . . that. . .

The man showed us so heavy a stone no man can lift.

  A. that

  B. as

  C. which

  D. and

本题如果在lift后加上it, 答案就是that了, 构成so. . . that. . .

  (1)so/such. . . that. . .

①The train was so full that I could hardly turn around.

②The wind was(so)strong that he could hardly move forward.

③She was so happy(that)she actually cried.

④He made such an excellent speech(that)everyone admired him.

  (2)so. . . that与such. . . that的区别

  so+

  such+

②It’s such nice weather that I don’t like to stay at home.

③We can’t finish so much work in such a short time.

He is such a little boy that his parents often teach him something.

make a mistake犯错误; make sense有意义, 讲得通; make an impression留下印象。

  12. 【解析】选A。 根据后半句中wouldn’t have finished可知是对过去发生的事情的假设, 能表示假设的只有but for, 意思是“要不是”, 相当于if it hadn’t been for. . . 。

  14. 【解析】选A。 refer to查阅, 提到, 谈到; turn to转向, 变成, 求助于, 致力于, 开始行动; attend to专心, 注意, 照顾; talk to跟……

  3. 【解析】选A。

  4. 【解析】选A。

  8. 【解析】选A。

  2. 【解析】选A。 . . my jaw dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food.

The closer he came to my service station, the more I muttered.
