When I saw a big handmade signboard “Welcome Yuxin” at the airport, I knew I had found a caring family at the other side of the world – the United States.

My host mom had already decorated my room for me.There was a doll on one side of the room, and a bookcase full of books on the other-they had heard I loved reading.Mom had also prepared a keyboard for me, since she knew that I played the piano.

My life in the family did not go so well at first.Because I am the only child in my family in China, I was not used to having two younger kids-Zachary and Grace-running around me yelling all the time.

I did not like sports much when I was back home, but now I love to join all kinds of sports.I am healthier and more confident too.

If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its car-plane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2011.

“It’s the next‘wow’vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh.“Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”

The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving.A runway is still required to take off and land.

The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.

The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go.When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.

The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet.It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers.Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.

The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS.Another option is a full-plane parachute.

“If you get into a very awful situation, it is the necessary safety option,”Gersh said.

So far,the company has more than 70 orders with deposits.“We’ re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,”Brown said.

My father had returned from his business visit to London when I came in, rather late, to supper. I could tell at once that he and my mother had been n discussing something. In that half-playful, half-serious way I knew so well, he said, "How would you like to go to Eton?"

"You bet," I cried quickly catching the joke. Everyone knew it was the most expensive, the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before. Besides, even at 12 or 13, I understood my father. He disliked any form of showing off. He always knew his proper station in life, which was in the middle of the middle class, our house was medium-sized; he had avoided joining Royal Liverpool Golf Club and went to a smaller one instead; though once he had got a second-hand Rolls-Royce at a remarkably low price, he felt embarrassed driving it, and quickly changed it for an Austin 1100.

This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped. Alas! I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict(冲突) with his fear of drawing attention to himself.

It seemed that he had happened to be talking to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remember my eyes stinging(刺痛) and my hands shaking with the puzzlement of my feelings. There was excitement, at the heart of great sadness.

"Oh, he doesn't want to go away," said my mother, "You shouldn't go on like this.” “It's up to him," said my father. "He can make up his own mind."

64.What was the writer's reaction to the idea of going to Eton?

As a child it would be strange to think that we could survive for very long unless there were people to teach us things. From the moment we are born, we are taught by our parents and other family members, relatives and close friends originally and that continues through childhood with our parents and teachers all providing us with learning experiences.

As adults too, society expects us to still keep learning but in a more specific manner. For example, it’s considered quite acceptable to go on as adults and to learn new skills and obtain qualifications(资格) to further our careers but when it comes to our emotional development, traditionally we believe that this is not something to talk about and that we should simply work things out for ourselves and to do that in a very quiet and private way.

If we are serious about our own personal growth, we should also be serious about the concept(概念) of learning for life. We should never stop our insatiable thirst for learning new things and encountering alternative beliefs, cultures, values etc. If we were to stop doing that, our personal development would stop too.

Therefore, we should embrace any opportunity we have to learn from others. This does not mean having to agree with them on every little issue. In fact, we will learn from many people we encounter with whom we have nothing in common at all. In addition to learning things from others which we believe may also help us to become better people, what we learn from those with whom we disagree on everything simply reinforces our own beliefs and values which is also valuable in terms of our own experience.

The beauty of wanting to learn from others is that you will remain open and willing to listen which, in return, will draw others towards you which will also open up many new doors and experiences.
