Don't talk to me. I'm busy with my iPhone.

Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That's not rudeness—people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they're certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection(沉思). Nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London Underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(乘车上下班的人). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40 000-yes, that's 40 000--" apps" ( programs downloaded for the iPhone ) have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-filler.

One" app", called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination (目的地) ISteam clouds the iPhoue screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the" steam" on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣) of choice. It's not just teenagers who"plug in" to their music--iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games e-books and music aren't enough to keep you occupied . Then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all this distraction, it's amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains,in the waves,or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry.Golf,as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water.Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example,in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment―friendly sports.Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse.Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit.If you walk regularly,it will be good for your heart and bones.Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from reused materials. But the final goal should be" green gyms". They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. Recently, a professor of philosophy in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.

He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are a very good friend. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn't. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.

Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.

Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich because you are a self-made man?

Answer: The most surprising thing is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I do not know much. All I am is rich.

People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purposes in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to bring happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

  54. The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money _______.

  A. is a good way to test your friendship

  B. will do harm to your friendship

  C. will strengthen your friendship

  D. is a good way to break off your friendship

  55. What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?

  A. He does not feel that he is well educated.

  B. He does not think that he is a very important person.

  C. He doesn't think that being rich is worth so much attention.

  D. He does not consider himself to be very successful.

  56. What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?

  A. Money is an end.

  B. Money is a means.

  C. Money is everything

  D. Money is unimportant.

  57. What does the answer mean by" All I am is rich. "?

  A. I am a rich person.

  B. I only have money.

  C. I have all money.

  D. I've got a large sum of money.

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.

My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”

At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to. She drove that message so deep onto my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school—walking on my own!

When the Great Depression(大萧条)hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.

Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel(汽车旅馆)for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.

Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1billion a year.

You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

  46. What caused Kemmons to start a motel by himself?

  A. His terrible experience in the hotel.

  B. His previous business success.

  C. His mother’s objection.

  D. The doctor’s words.

  47. Which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother?

  A. Modest, helpful, and hard-working.

  B. Careful, helpful and beautiful.

  C. Strict, sensitive and supportive.

  D. Loving, supportive and strong-willed.

  48. Which of the following led to Kemmons’ success according to the passage?

  A. A poor family, higher education, self-confidence and hard work.

  B. Mom’s encouragement, clear goals, self-confidence and hard work.

  C. Mom’s encouragement, a poor family, higher education, and clear goals.

  D. Mom’s encouragement, a poor family, higher education, and opportunities.

  Dear Abby,

I am a very conservative woman. I don’t drink, dance, wear makeups or pants. I enjoy the company of friends despite (尽管) our differences and thought they enjoyed mine.

On our most recent outing, however, they laughed at my religious jewelry, commented on my “lack of fashion,” and made me feel guilty for not wanting to stay out late.

Despite this, they are great friends and would help me at the drop of a hat. I don’t bring up their being overweight, or that I think some of the clothes they wear are ugly. I don’t criticize them for sleeping around. I wish they would accept me for who I am.

I am considering not going out with them the next time they ask, but I don’t really want it to come to that. Any suggestions?

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger(伪造者), was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he became rich by selling his small but real collection of early U.S. autographs(手稿). Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection(察觉), he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale.

Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t deal with a respectable buyer but people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Spring’s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.

  57. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?

  A. There was a greater demand there than in America.

  B. There was less chance of being detected there.

  C. Britain was Spring’s birthplace

  D. The prices were higher in England and Canada.

58.After the Civil War, there was a great demand in Britain for

  .

  A. Southern money

  B. signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin

  C. Southern manuscripts and letters

  D. Civil War battle plans

  59.Robert Spring spent 15 years

  .

  A. running a bookstore in Philadelphia

  B. keeping in touch with Miss Fanny Jackson

  C. as a forger

  D. as a respectable dealer

  60. According to the passage, forgeries are usually sold to

  .

  A. sharp-eyed experts

  B. persons who aren’t experts

  C. book dealers

  D. owners of old books
