Plan ahead to make your family trip run smoothly

Family vacations are cherished memories. Keeping children entertained on the road or during a flight, however, can be challenging. The best way to cut down on anxiety? Plan ahead.

Avoid giving children snacks that contain sugar and caffeine. Sweet treats keep them happy and quiet for five minutes, as it fills them with unusable energy that will turn into crankiness (脾气坏) when the sugar wears off. Bring fun, small snacks like flavored baked chips, apple sauce, raisins, granola bars—and top it off with a little protein like and cheese sticks to keep the blood sugar levels nice and steady.

Bring plenty of plastic or paper bags. This is the perfect time to put those spare bags around the house to use. Store them in your purse or pocket, as well as in the car. This is a quick solution for garbage, diaper wrapping or motion sickness.

Avoid extra costs on bulk items you will need during the trip. When flying, purchase bulk items like diapers, formula, wipes at your destination. In the past it was convenient and free to check these items. Now each checked luggage item costs $25 or more on average. When driving, do the opposite; take your bulk items to avoid extra trips to the store when you arrive, which can help you avoid impulse travel purchases.

Bring a full change of clothing for each child. Keep these items within fairly easy reach. When a spill or mess happens, this will help parents avoid unexpected (and unbudgeted) clothing purchases.

Travel planning can help make family vacations what they are supposed to be: Fun!

1.Which of the following can keep the blood sugar levels nice and steady?

  A.Coffee.

B.Apple pie with sugar in it.

  C.Candies.

  D.Cheese sticks.

2.Why should you bring plenty of plastic or paper bags during vacation?

A.Because you can use them to keep garbage, vomit (呕吐物) and wrap diaper.

B.Because they can prevent you from being stolen.

C.Because big bags can hold more items, which brings you much convenience.

D.Because they can save you $25.

3.Which is the proper place for you to buy bulk items when driving?

  A.At the destination.

B.At wherever you can buy cheaper ones.

C.At the place you just go out of the things you need.

D.In the stores near your house.

4.What should parents do to avoid unexpected clothing purchases during their vacation?

A.Do not let children make their clothes dirty.

B.Bring a full change of clothing for each child.

  C.Wash the dirty clothes frequently.

D.Do not allow children eat during their vacation.

For several years, Americans have enjoyed tele-shopping—watching TV and buying things by phone. Now tele-shopping is starting in Europe (欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.

Tele-shopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two tele-shopping channels, and the French spend about $20 million a year to buy things through these channels.

In Germany, until last year tele-shopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed(允许) more tele-shopping. Other channels can open for tele-business, including(包括) the largest American tele-shopping company and a 24 hour tele-shopping company. German businessmen are hoping this new tele-shopping will help them sell more things.

Some people like tele-shopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call tele-shopping “junk (垃圾) on the air”. Many Europeans usually worry about the quality (质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV.

The need for high quality means that European tele-shopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.

  5.

People like tele-shopping because it is __________.

  A. American

  B. cheaper

  C. easier

  D. more popular

  6.

Some Europeans don’t like tele-shopping because they __________

  A. don’t like to buy things

  B. don’t watch TV

  C. believe the things sold on TV are expensive

  D. think the things sold on TV are bad quality

  7.

  In Germany, tele-shopping may __________

  A. help businessmen get more money

  B. keep the shops open longer

  C. have fewer buyers

  D. bring better TV programmes

  8.

The best title of this passage is __________

  A. American Tele-shopping

  B. Tele-shopping Companies

  C. Tele-shopping in Europe

  D. Tele-shopping—Junk on the Air

  C

If you’re tired of the Mediterranean and don’t want to head to Disney again, perhaps it’s time for a summer holiday in space. Russia has declared plans for its first floating hotel, 217 miles above earth, and it is something of an offering with good service.

Hosting just seven guests in a four cabins, the accommodation will boast huge windows with views back to earth and tasty microwave meals will be served instead of the ones often used by astronauts.

Just getting there will be an adventure in itself—it will take two days aboard a Soyuz rocket—and it won’t exactly be a budget holiday: A five-day stay will cost you£100, 000 to£500, 000 for your journey. The hotel is due to open by 2016 and, according to those behind it,

will be far more comfortable than the International Space Station (ISS) used by astronauts and cosmonauts.

In the weightlessness of space, visitors can choose to have beds that are either vertical(垂直的) or horizontal. Tourists, who will be accompanied by experienced crew, will dine on food prepared on Earth and sent up on the rocket, to be reheated in microwave ovens. Many kinds of delicacies will be available.

Iced tea, mineral water and fruit juices will be available, but alcohol will be strictly prohibited. Toilets will use flowing air instead of water to move waste through the system. Waste water will be recycled.

Sergei Kostenko, chief executive of Orbital Technologies which will construct the hotel,

said: “Our planned module inside will not remind you of the International Space Station. A hotel should be comfortable inside, and it will be possible to look at the Earth. The hotel will be aimed at wealthy individuals and people working for private companies who want to do research in space.” The hotel can also be used as an emergency bolthole (避难处) for astronauts aboard the International Space Station if there is a crisis.

  9. Which can be the best title of the passage?

  B. The first space hotel is under construction now

  D. Russia has the advanced technology in exploring space

  10. What does the underlined word “budget” in the 3rd paragraph mean?

  A. expensive

  B. worthwhile

  C. economic

  D. uncomfortable

  11. What kind of accommodation will the guests have in the space hotel?

  A. They will have the same food as the astronauts have.

  B. Many kinds of drinks are available including alcohol.

  C. Guests can have beds that are either vertical or horizontal.

  D. Tourists are accompanied by the astronauts from the ISS.

  12. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The space hotel is built to remind you of the International Space Station.

  B. The hotel is constructed with big windows so that tourists can see the earth.

  C. The company, Orbital Technologies, has already begun to build the space

  hotel.

  D. In the near future, a space trip for most of the people can be realized.

I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that’s impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly, easy-going and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardest-working people I have ever met.

In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I teach many students a year, talking to them freely.

The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn’t large and I live better. Non-imported(非出口的) foods are very cheap, so are clothing and articles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese value education. However, it is reported that many children can’t afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education.

When we read news of China in the west, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems.

When I am asked which country I consider better, China or the US, my answer has always been the same, “We are not worse or better than each other, we are only different.”

  13.

What does the author think of Chinese people?

  A. He thinks most Chinese people hardly work.

  B. He thinks most Chinese people are proud.

  C. He praises most Chinese people a lot.

  D. He dislikes most Chinese people.

  14.

What are not cheap in China in the author’s opinion?

  A. Clothes and shoes made in China.

  B. Local foods

  C. Public transportation tickets.

  D. Imported foods

  15.

We can infer from the passage that the author thinks __________.

  A. the westerners have got to know China well

  B. China’s economic miracles have appeared everywhere

  C. the progress of China is seldom reported in the US

  D. the education in rural areas is never cared about in China

  第二节 (5小题;2分,10分)

How to be a good communicator

  16

they’ve been heard and they’ve been understood. As a good communicator should be a good listener, five steps are advocated toward good listening.

The first step is cooperating. How does a difficult person know that you’re listening and understanding? In fact, it’s through the way you look and sound while he is talking.

  17

When the person begins to repeat what’s been said, it’s signal of step two: turning back.

  18

Send a clear signal that you’re listening carefully and that you think what he is saying is important.

Having heard what he has to say, the next step is clarifying. At this point, you start to gather information about what is being communicated.

  19

The fourth step is to summarize(概括)what you’ve heard.

  20

Having listened carefully, you’ve now arrived at the point of confirming with the person that he feels that his thoughts have been fully voiced. Ask if he feels understood.

When enough sincere listening, questioning, and remembering are brought together, understanding is usually achieved and a difficult person becomes less difficult and more cooperative.

Ask some open-ended questions, which will allow you to figure out what intention he is hoping to satisfy.

This allows you to make sure that both you and the difficult person are on the same page.

  C. It means that you repeat back some words he is using.

  D. When difficult people express themselves orally, they generally want at least two

  things:

  E. When you communicate with who have difficulty expressing themselves, they need

  your help.

  F. Giving clear signals tell him that you have understood him completely.

  G. You do this by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of

  understanding.

  III.

  Housework For Children

  41

is difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be responsible for housework,

  42

with one of the following suggestions, you really can get your children to help at home.

If you give your children the impression that they can not do anything quite right, then they 43

(regard) themselves as unfit or unable persons.

  44

the children believe that they can succeed, they will never become totally independent.

My daughter Carla’s fifth-grade teacher made every child in her class special. When students received

  45

(little) than a perfect test score, she would point out

  46

they had mastered and declare firmly they could learn what they had missed.

You can use the same technique when you evaluate

  47

child’s work at home. Don’t always scold but give lots of praise instead. Talk about what he has done right, not about what he hasn’t. If a difficult task

  48

(do) right by your child, promise him

  49

Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.

Learning is a process of trying and failing and trying and succeeding. If you teach your children

  50

to fear a mistake of failure, they will learn faster and achieve success at last.

  One possible version

  Dear sir,

I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families of the British students.

We have a large and clean house, which lies in a beautiful area of the city. I’m good at English and my parents are both professors of English, so I’m sure we won’t have any difficulty communicating with English speakers. My father is an excellent driver and we will be very glad to show foreign students around some nearby places of interest in our own car. Last month we received two American students. We had a great time. Besides, my mother cooks well, so the students will be able to enjoy delicious Chinese food. I would greatly appreciate it if I could have the chance to make friends with them.

  Looking forward to your reply

  yours,

  Li Hua
