英语四级考试阅读材料:暴雨袭击中国西南部

　　A savage rainstorm has swept southwestern Chinas Chongqing Municipality, forcing local factories to shut down and disrupting traffic.

　　来势汹汹的暴风雨横扫了中国西南部的重庆自治市，使得当地工厂关闭和交通中断。

　　Raging water roars down to Wanzhou city, creating wild waterfalls along the slope. Some communities have built sand-bag walls to protect their homes.

　　凶猛的暴雨顺着万州市呼啸而过，沿着山坡形成狂暴的瀑布。一些社区建立起沙袋墙保护他们的家园。

　　But other areas have not been spared, as water seeped into the first floor.

　　但是其他地区未能幸免，因为水已经流入了一楼。

　　The rain arrived suddenly. And it carried a lot of mud from the mountains nearby. I didnt have much warning. Cars could not pass either.

　　The downpour transformed a local machinery factory into a huge pond. Plumes of smoke are the only evidence of the production that once was.

　　Everythings gone. It will take us at least a month to resume production.

　　一切都不见了。重新生产至少要花费我们一个月的时间。

　　But some workers say theyre lucky enough to still be alive.

　　In the afternoon the running water was making huge noises like thunder. And the moment we stepped out to safety, the factory was submerged under water.

　　Thousands of passengers have been stranded at the Wanzhou railway station. After urgent repairs, two railways have resumed operation.

　　Road travel is also still dangerous as water continues to flow down from mountains, while minor landslides occur from time to time.
