《还珠格格》剧情背景设定在乾隆时期的清朝（be set in Qing Dynasty during the Qianlong Emperor's reign），主角“小燕子“平民变格格（a Cinderella-like story）。过了这么多年，仍有电视台在重播该剧（reruns of the drama still be seen on TV channels)，足见其号召力。当年主演们一夜间家喻户晓（main cast members in the drama became household names overnight），而今这些大腕（big names）也依旧活跃在娱乐界（Chinese entertainment industry）。
