相似词语辨析【94】last，latest

　　last，latest

　　这两个词都是late的最高级。用作形容词时，last 在意义上和latest有点相近，实际上，它们的涵义和使用场合是不一样的。

　　Last指连续顺序中的最后一个，一般译作最后的，有时译为上一次的或过去的。last的对语是first.例：

　　The last time I saw them was in Paris last year．

　　我最后一次看见他们是去年在巴黎。

　　The last letter of the alphabet is Z．

　　字母表的最后一个字母是Z.

　　I dont know whether you have received my last letter or not．

　　我不知道你是否已收到我上一封信。

　　Latest表示时间上的最近，一般译作最近的、最新的或最晚的。latest的对语是earliest.例：

　　The latest news about the Mideast is the beginning of another round of peace-talks．

　　关于中东的最新消息是另一回和谈已展开。

　　What is the latest fashion in town？

　　城中的最新时尚是什么？

　　This is his latest novel；we hope it is not his last．

　　这是他最新的著作，我们希望这不是他的最后一部。

　　请注意，last year、last month、last week、last night都是时间状语，它们的前面无需使用介词，但last century却是例外，我们必须说in the last century或 during the last century.介词in和during不能省略。

　　试比较下列两句：

　　A fire broke out last night．

　　This fountain pen was used in the last century．

　　Last的片语颇多，现举数语，以见一斑：

　　the last days 死期；世界末日

　　on ones last legs 黔驴技穷；强弩之末

　　the last word 定论；遗言

　　the last straw 最终难忍或导致垮台的因素

　　the last resort 最后一招
