俚语“bite the dust”(字面意:吃地上的尘土),指的是“死亡”。不过,用时可要小心,它常用来指“(坏蛋)完蛋/倒毙”。朋友家人去世时,千万不要用这一说法。 “Bite the dust”语出荷马史诗《伊利亚特》。特洛伊战争长达十年之久,留给后人的短语在数百个十年后依然不绝于耳。《伊利亚特》中,荷马在描述将士们坠马倒地的惨状时,用了短语“bite the dust”(面朝下,嘴巴里满是尘土)。 到了20世纪30年代,美国因盛行西部牛仔片,短语“bite the dust”曾一度成为银屏妙语,用来形容匪徒失败、完蛋。看下面一个例句: The spy bit the dust at the end of the book.
