Bender: 狂饮
您如果看过美国情景喜剧Seinfeld(《欢乐单身派对》),肯定记得剧中Jerry 解释bender(狂饮)一词时引发的笑料:人喝醉后乱把东西拉弯。就像还珠格格的望文生义一样,这显然是为博得大家一乐,但笑过之后,我们可别忘了看看bender 一词的渊源。
翻开字典,我们知道bender 其实是“狂欢、饮酒作乐”的意思, 一般会狂饮到没了知觉。这可不只是醉一晚上的事,通常酒后两天还一副醉态。有些词典把bender 简单解释为“a spree”。两个词确实都有“狂欢”的意思,但spree 意思更广一些,可用于一切无节制的行为,例如“购物狂”;跟bender 最相近的词应该是binge(狂闹、狂欢)。
Bender 作为“饮酒作乐”最早出现在19世纪,来源于动词bend。18世纪(大约1758年)的时候,bend在俚语中指“to drink heavily”(狂饮)。最早的时候,bend 是“拉紧、扣紧”的意思,专门指射手拉紧弓箭成弧形,后来就指能使物体产生这种弧形的动作了:弯曲,弄弯。再进一步想,醉酒后要站起来的确是要费九牛二虎之力,还真跟bend --“费力地拉东西”,有得一拼哦!
