希腊议会将为新改革方案投票

The Greek government is preparing to rush apackage of economic reforms and austerity measures through parliament as early as today in abid to convince its eurozone creditors it is committed to striking a deal for a third bailout thatwould save it from crashing out of the euro.

Greece’s cabinet approved the plan, which includes increases in value added tax and savingsfrom public pensions demanded by creditors, yesterday evening before sending it to eurozoneauthorities. “We are ready to compromise, prime minister Alexis Tsipras told his cabinetcolleagues, Greek media reported.

Syriza is to hold a meeting of its MPsearly this morning.

Earlier yesterday, Wolfgang Schäuble, Germany’s hardline finance minister, commended his newGreek counterpart Euclid Tsakalotos for his “more conventional approach but urged Athensto start implementing reforms immediately even before reaching an agreement on a new bailout,as a way of rebuilding trust between Athens and its eurozone partners.

But Mr Schäuble recounted aconversation with his US counterpart in which he suggested swapping debt-ladenneighbours. “I offered my friend Jack Lew that we could take Puerto Rico into the eurozone ifthe US were willing to take Greece into the dollar union. He thought that was a joke.
