BERLIN, Nov. 29 -- Suat Serdar's late goal secured Schalke a 2-1 victory and ended Union Berlin's winning run of four games at the opener of the 13th round in Bundesliga on Friday.
Newly promoted Union Berlin grabbed the better start on the road as Marcus Ingvartsen and Marius Bluter came to promising chances in the early stages.
The hosts needed some time to gain foothold into the game but were able to break the deadlock against the run of the game with their first chance as Bentio Ramen volleyed home from 16 meters in the 23rd minute.
Union remained unimpressed and responded well through Sebastian Andersson, who tested goalkeeper Alexander Nubel six minutes later.
The visitors had the golden chance to restore parity in the 36th minute when Robert Andrich was fouled inside the box. Ingvartsen stepped up and made no mistake to drill the ball into the top left corner.
Both sides remained on the front foot but neither Andersson nor Schalke's Daniel Caligiuri were able to mark the lead.
After the restart, Union focussed on their defence and kept all their men behind the ball whereas the "Royal Blues" increased the pressure.
Schalke pressed for the winner but Serdar and Amine Harit lacked in accuracy to overcome Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz at the hour mark.
The hosts efforts eventually paid off in the closing period as substitute Ahmed Kutucu forced a turnover before passing to Harit. The midfielder wasted no time and passed into the path of Serdar, whose shot into the far post corner sealed all three points on home soil.
With the result, Schalke move on the 2nd place for the moment meanwhile Union Berlin stay on the 11th position of the standings.
The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Hoffenheim encounter Fortuna Dusseldorf, Hertha Berlin face Borussia Dortmund, bottom side Cologne see Augsburg, last placed Paderborn clash with Leipzig and defending champions Bayern Munich meet Bayer Leverkusen.
