Canada’s national broadcaster issued an on-air and online apology last night after one of its commentators said a Chinese swimmer at the Rio Olympics “died like a pig” when she lost a race.
Following the women’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay final, CBC commentator Byron MacDonald, who thought his microphone was off, said: “The little 14-year-old from China dropped the ball, baby. Too excited, went out like stink, died like a pig. Thanks for that.”

The incident immediately caused outrage online with watchers tweeting their disbelief at the comments by MacDonald, a 1972 Olympian and swimming coach at the University of Toronto, and called for the him to lose his job.
The CBC moved quickly, responding to offended users on Twitter with personal apologies. Scott Russell, another CBC commentator, issued an on-air apology for MacDonald’s remarks.

@plowe We apologize the comment on a swim performance made it to air. It was an unfortunate choice of words - we're sorry it happened.
CBC later issued a formal statement, with spokesman Chuck Thompson telling reporters: “We sincerely regret that these statements were made, and that they were allowed to go to air … To be clear, Byron’s comments were related to the swimmer’s performance, not to her as an individual. That said, they were inappropriate and an unfortunate choice of words and Byron is very sorry for what he said.”
The race ended with China finishing fourth and Canada winning the bronze medal. It wasn’t immediately clear who the comments were targeting but it appears to have been 14-year-old Ai Yanhan, who slowed her team down during her lap of the relay and allowed Canada to gain ground.
