特朗普言论引发北约盟国恐慌

Nato’s chief issued asharp rebuttal to Donald Trump yesterday after the Republican presidentialnominee suggested the US might not defend European allies if they came underRussian attack.

The unusually blunt plea for alliance unityby Jens Stoltenberg, Nato’s secretary-general, came as Mr Trump’s remarks weregreeted with alarm in Nato’s eastern flank, particularly the three Baltic countries and Poland.

Mr Trump’s remarks went further thaNPRevious comments to cast doubt over his support for mutual defence of allies.The North Atlantic Treaty that established Nato commits the US to treat anattack on any of the other 27 members as an attack in itself.

Some Baltic politicians went further. OjarsKalnins, chair of the foreign affairs committee in Latvia’s parliament, said MrTrump’s remarks were irresponsible. “This won’t be good for Nato unity or thesecurity situation,” he said. “In principle, he is saying the US will notfulfil its promises or obligations.”
