A team of researchers from Australia's Swinburne University of Technology has unveiled first electric bus to be completely designed, engineered and manufactured in Australia.

The bus can carry 50 passengers 125 miles (200 kilometers) on a single charge, and could be up to 80% cheaper to maintain than the country's current fleet of diesel-powered buses.

Unveiled at the 2017 Maintenance Conference and Bus Expo in Melbourne, the electric bus was developed by an inter-institutional team comprised of experts from academia and the automotive industry.

While Malaysian officials have already inked an AUD $170 million contract with the bus' developers, Australian officials have yet to follow suit.

"I'd really like to see the Australian government invest in this technology. For the sake of the environment, as well as the future of manufacturing in Australia," remarked Professor Ajay Kapoor, Pro Vice-Chancellor of International Research Engagement at Swimdburne.
