The average age in Britain has hit 40 for the first time as life expectancy continues to soar, official figures revealed this morning.

Since 1974 the typical age in the UK has increased by six years, with more than 11.4 million people now aged over 65 - an increase of 300,000 in just a year.

The growing numbers of elderly people is helping to fuel a population boom. According to the Office for National Statistics, Britain's population has hit a new record - increasing by almost 500,000 to 64.6 million.

The population increase over was fuelled by growing numbers of births over deaths, caused by people living longer, and a surge in migration.

An ONS spokesman said the statistics meant the UK population had grown by almost half a million since mid-2013, up 0.77 per cent to 64,596,800.
