First Lady Michelle Obama said the U.S. is ready to have a female president but said she isn't the one and was quiet when asked whether she thinks former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will win the presidency in 2016.

'She hasn't announced anything, so I'm certainly not going to get ahead of her,' Mrs. Obama said in an interview with Parade magazine. She said who will be the first female president depends on 'who's the best person out there.'

Intense speculation about 2016 has already begun, and Mrs. Clinton is considered a top contender and her supporters are already raising money should she enter the race. Speculation about her chances was fueled in part by a lunch she had last month with President Barack Obama and a separate breakfast with Vice President Joe Biden.

The White House insisted the meetings were chiefly social. But Mr. Biden has hinted he may run in 2016 though it's unclear whether he and Mrs. Clinton would run against each other, considering they both worked closely together.

Mrs. Obama was also asked about the coming 50 anniversary of the March on Washington, where in 1963 about 250,000 gathered on the National Mall to protest segregation and got to hear Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech.

She said she is hopeful about what Mr. King worked for. She also said that having an African American family in the White House does positively affect race relations.

'Children born in the last eight years will only know an African-American man being president of the United States,' she said. 'That changes the bar for all of our children, regardless of their race, their sexual orientation, their gender. It expands the scope of opportunity in their minds.'
