爱是最神奇的调料

When I was a boy growing up,

当我还是一个小男孩的时候

On Sundays,

每到周日

we would always have a delicious Italian dinner.

我们都会吃一餐丰盛的意式大餐

My Nana’s slow cooked sauce was the key.

我祖母精煮慢炖的酱紫是这顿饭的灵魂

In it were cooked potatoes, chicken, steak, and meatballs.

这里面有土豆，鸡肉，牛排肉，还有肉丸子

Mounds of spaghetti would also be boiled

堆成小山的意大利面煮好了

and dropped into the red sauce.

再倒入艳红色的酱紫

We also had loaves of homemade Italian bread

我们还有一条条家里自己做的意式面包

covered in butter.

上面涂满了黄油

Every now and then

每隔一段时间

there were also big chunks of Provolone cheese.

我们还能吃到大块大块的波伏沃起司

We would all eat, talk, and laugh

我们一边吃一边交谈，欢笑

until both our bellies and hearts were full.

直到肚子里装满食物，心中充满欢乐

After Mom and Nana passed away

妈妈和祖母去世后

my Dad would still make the sauce from time to time

父亲偶尔还是会做这样的酱汁

and invite me and my brothers over to his little home

邀请我和哥哥们去他的小屋里

for a dinner full of fine food and happy memories.

吃一顿丰盛的大餐，让心中装满欢乐的回忆

When my Dad died

父亲死后

he passed the family recipe on to me and my daughter.

他把家传的酱汁菜谱交给了我和我女儿

We often made the sauce for dinner

我们经常做酱汁，在晚餐上享用

but for some reason it never tasted quite right.

不知为何，酱汁的味道总是不对头

At first I thought we had gotten the recipe wrong

一开始我以为我们弄错了酱汁的配方

but one day I realized what was missing.

直到有一天，我终于明白了弄丢的是什么

On that day right before dinner

一天晚上，在晚餐前

I closed my eyes,

我闭上自己的眼睛

opened my heart,

敞开心扉

and imagined my Dad, Mom, and Nana all sitting at the table around me

想象着我的爸爸，妈妈，祖母还和我一起围坐在桌前

with smiling faces.

脸上挂着微笑

Then I placed the pasta on my fork

接着我用叉子卷起意大利面

and slowly slid it into my mouth.

慢慢将它吸入口中

It tasted perfect

味道太完美了

just as it always had when I was a boy growing up.

尝起来就和我小时候一模一样

The secret ingredient was,

what it had always been: Love!

一直都是——爱！
