The idea is simple enough. Players sketch a picture and challenge friends to guess what it is. Draw Something is the creation of OMGPop, a social gaming start-up in New York.

There are two versions of Draw Something — a free one, supported by ads, and a paid one, for 99 cents. Both versions let users purchase virtual goods, like additional colors to draw with.

Mr. Porter, the chief executive of the company, attributed the game’s success to its real-time feel. Players can watch animated playbacks of their teammates trying to guess their creation before taking their turn. The word choices are another big selling point; in addition to standard selections like “orange” and “dynamite,” the game is liberally infused with pop culture references.
