Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has resigned following weeks of public protests over his controversial order to arrest a senior judge.

马尔代夫总统穆罕默德纳希德(Mohamed Nasheed)今天辞去了总统职位。此前他下令逮捕该国一名高级法官的行为引发了争议，导致持续数周的公众抗议。

Brig. Ahmed Shiyam told reporters Tuesday that Nasheed has agreed to step down and hand over the presidency to his deputy Mohammed Waheed Hassan.

军方旅长希亚姆(Brig. Ahmed Shiyam)周二对记者说，总统纳希德已经同意下台，将总统权力移交给她的副手哈山(Mohammed Waheed Hassan)。

There was no immediate comment from Nasheed, a former pro-democracy campaigner.

纳希德曾经积极推行民主运动，他并没有立即回应此事。

马尔代夫军队控制了政府

Maldives army and police have taken control of the government on Tuesday following protests, media sources said.

有媒体说，在数周的抗议活动后，马尔代夫的军队和警察已于周二控制了政府。

The source said President Mohamed Nasheed is going to resign officially soon and Vice President will make acting president. However, Maldives High Commission in Colombo said earlier that President Nasheed already resigned, which was denied by an official from the president's office.

消息称，总统穆罕默德纳希德很快就将官方宣布他辞职一事，副总统将担任代总统一职。但是位于斯里兰卡首都科伦坡的马尔代夫高级专员公署早先称总统纳希德已经辞职，而总统办公室的官方否认了这点。

Reacting to the stepping down of the Maldive President Mohamed Nasheed, India said it is not a coup but a political settlement of the country, said local TV reports.

对于马尔代夫总统下台一事，印度当地电视台的记者说：这并不是政变，而是政治协议。
