A man has been arrested following an FBI investigation into a Hollywood hacking ring called Operation Hackerazzi which stole naked photographs from the phones and email accounts of celebrities.

Last month nude images of the actress Scarlett Johansson appeared on the internet after reportedly being taken from her mobile phone by hackers.

Private pictures or videos were also hacked from devices belonging to the actresses Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens.

Miss Hudgens, a star of the "High School Musical" series, met with FBI agents at her lawyer's office in March over the hacking of her Gmail account.

According to reports earlier this year by celebrity news website TMZ up to 50 female celebrities had their mobile phones or other devices targeted. Actresses Jessica Alba and Selena Gomez, and singer Christina Aguilera, were reportedly among the victims.

The suspect was arrested in Florida and is believed to have distributed any images obtained from the hacking to websites for free.

Speaking after having her private photographs stolen by hackers last month, Miss Johansson said: "Just because you're in the spotlight, or just because you're an actor or making films or whatever, doesn't mean that you're not entitled to your own personal privacy.

The "cyber intrusions" may have targeted devices including desktop computers, laptops, iPads, mobile phones and personal online accounts.

The FBI later said the suspect was Christopher Chaney of Jacksonville, Florida.
