Nobel literature prize winner Mo Yan dodged requests Thursday to repeat comments supportive of Chinese countryman and jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo, and said censorship may be necessary to stop the dissemination of untrue rumors and insults but that he was against censoring the truth.

Mo Yan, real name Guan Moye, repeatedly skirted calls to reiterate comments made at an October news conference in China when he said he hoped 2010 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, who is serving an 11-year jail sentence for advocating democratic reforms, would be freed soon.

'I've already issued my opinion on this matter. I think you can go online to do a search,' he said at a news conference Thursday in Stockholm, a day ahead of delivering his Nobel lecture.

When pressed by reporters to repeat his position and explain why he had earlier said that Mr. Liu should be freed, Mo Yan─the pen name is Chinese for 'don't speak'─replied: 'I'm sure you know what I said already. Why do you want me to repeat? We'll leave it for time to judge.'

Mo Yan's measured comments illustrate the balance he seeks to strike between not overtly criticizing Chinese authorities and addressing criticism that he has been too cautious in standing up for freedom of speech.

China heralded his win as an indication of the country's growing clout. Plans are under way to spend millions of dollars on a theme park around the writer's old home in Gaomi in Shandong province, marking a contrast with Beijing's treatment of Mr. Liu, whose 2010 Nobel Peace Prize win prompted protests from the government.

This week, a group of more than 130 Nobel laureates in an open letter to new Communist Party leader Xi Jinping called for Mr. Liu's immediate release.

'I have always been independent. When I am forced to express my opinion, I will never do it,' Mo Yan said when asked if he would also sign the letter.

Mo Yan's initial comments expressing sympathy for Mr. Liu received praise from former critics such as dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who had first accused Mo Yan of being an unworthy winner.

Mo Yan's win has sparked debate on whether the Nobel committee should consider values such as human rights and freedom of speech or merely stick to an author's literary body of work when picking winners.

Mo Yan said his win was for literature, not politics.

'I've never given any compliments or praised the system of censorship but I also believe that in every country of the world, censorship exists,' Mo Yan said. 'The only difference is in the degree and way of censorship. Without censorship, then any person could on television or online vilify others. This should not be allowed in any country. As long as it is not contrary to the true facts, it should not be censored. Any disinformation, vilification, rumors or insults should be censored.'

The Chinese author's Communist Party membership and his post as vice president of the National Writer's Association puts him in the camp of mainstream writers working within China's autocratic political system. Some artists and writers have accused him of being too cozy with authorities to be worthy of a Nobel. Particular criticism has been levied against his contribution to the production of a handwritten special edition of Mao's 1942 talks on art and literature as well as his participation in a protest against the presence of dissident writers during a walkout of a German book fair.

Nobel literature laureate Herta Müller recently told Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter that Mo Yan had contributed to the censorship of other writers and that his victory was 'a slap in the face for all those working for democracy and human rights.'

Mo Yan said he was at first 'a bit furious' at the criticism. 'But then gradually, I felt the persons criticizing me had really nothing to do with me.'

Others have defended Mo Yan, arguing that his decision to occasionally toe the party line has allowed him to stay relevant in China, unlike dissident writers whose books have little if any domestic impact. They also point out that many of his books are at least indirectly critical of the government.

'We wouldn't know half as much about China's awful history in the villages of ordinary people if we didn't have Mo Yan's books and novels,' Swedish academy member Per Wastberg said in an interview.

Mo Yan, who has been credited as one of the first to combine magic with gritty everyday life, was awarded the prize for work that, 'with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary.'

Mr. Wastberg defended the academy's choice both on literary and political grounds, arguing that Mo Yan is one of the world's most remarkable story tellers and one of its sharpest contemporary social critics.

'He's very bold. In my interpretation, he even alludes to the massacre on Tiananmen Square, things you aren't allowed to write about in China,' Mr. Wastberg said.
