After finishing as the runner-up in this year's Australian Open, China's Li Na bettered that finish by earning the women's championship at the French Open with a 6-4, 7-6 (0) victory over Italy's Francesca Schiavone and becoming the first Asian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title.

After serving out the first set, Li broke in the opening game of the second set. Schiavone broke back later in the set and ultimately forced a tiebreak. Li had lost the Australian Open title after taking the first set and was determined not to let this opportunity slip away as well; she dominated the tiebreak with blistering ground strokes and good defense, capturing the title.

Defending champion Schiavone was broken twice in the match and but converted just one of her two break-point opportunities. Although she picked up her game late in the second set, she started slow, recording just three winners to five unforced errors in the first set, while Li's total in the set was 17 winners to 10 unforced errors.
