Wonder no longer why Maria Shriver left: The Los Angeles Times reported this morning that former Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger acknowledged to her recently that he’d fathered the child of a household staffer.

"After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger said in a response to questions from the Times Monday night. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry."

Unclear what prompted the disclosure now: The Times reports that the woman retired from the staff in January after working for the family for 20 years. And a source told the paper that Schwarzenegger — when the time the child was born would have been a movie star still, not yet in politics — took responsibility from the start and has provided financial support ever since.
